本日、日本で初めての開催となる聴覚障碍者のための世界大会「夏季デフリンピック競技大会」の開会式が東京体育館で行われますね。世界約８０か国が参加し、競技数は陸上、サッカー、バスケットボール、水泳、卓球、柔道など２１競技にわたり、ほぼオリンピックと同様のルールで実施されます。１１月２６日の閉会式までの約１０日間、各会場で熱戦が繰り広げられることでしょう。

 

今回は日本初開催ということで、これまでより日本メディアに多く取り上げられている気がします。私も大会の名前はもちろん知っていましたが、デフリンピックの歴史など知らないことも多かったので調べてみました。

 

デフリンピックの歴史は実はパラリンピックよりも古く、第一回大会は１９２４年のフランス・パリ夏季大会で、国際ろう者スポーツ委員会（ICSD）により運営されました。当時は「国際サイレント競技大会（International Silent Games)」という名称でしたが、２００１年に「deaf」＋「 Olympics」で「デフリンピック」と改称されました。

ちなみに第一回パラリンピックが開催されたのが１９６０年で、国際パラリンピック委員会（IPC）が発足したのは１９８９年です。ICSDもIPCに参加していた時期があったようですが、１９９５年にICSDは独立し、聴覚障碍者はパラリンピックではなくデフリンピックに参加することが定められました。

現在は２年に１度、夏季大会（４年に１度）と冬季大会（４年に１度）が交互に開催されています。今回の東京大会は１００周年の記念すべき大会となるとのこと。日本での開催は他国からも長年強く望まれていたようです。これまでに開催された国は２６カ国、今回の大会参加選手は約３０００人です。日本が初めて大会に参加したのは１９６５年のアメリカ・ワシントン大会からとなり、前回のブラジルで行われた夏季大会では日本は過去最多の３０個のメダルを獲得しています。

 

今朝のニュースで取材されていた女子バスケットボールの日本代表選手は、「聴覚障碍者は目からの情報に敏感なため、コート内の空いているスペースをいち早く察知する能力があり、耳が聞こえる選手たちの中でもそれが強みとなっていた」と話していました。研ぎ澄まされた感覚が成しえる技というものがあるのでしょうね。

 

デフリンピックの観戦は、基本的に事前申し込みの必要はなく無料とのこと！（混雑状況によっては入場制限あり）駐車場はないため公共交通機関を利用してください。各会場は「東京２０２５デフリンピック」の公式サイトから競技日程や会場が確認できます。

 

会場を一部紹介しますと

などとなっています。

 

また会場ごとにカラーの違う「東京２０２５デフリンピック　限定オリジナルリストバンド」が配られるそうです。大会のモチーフである「桜の花弁」がデザインされ、同じカラーで会場の一体感を演出するとのこと。名古屋からは少し遠いので、関東近辺の方がうらやましいです。貴重な体験となるはずです。是非足を運んでみてはいかかでしょうか。

Today, the opening ceremony for the Summer Deaflympics, the world’s first global competition for athletes with hearing impairments held in Japan, will take place at Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium. Approximately 80 countries worldwide are participating, with events spanning 21 sports including track and field, soccer, basketball, swimming, table tennis, and judo. The competitions will follow rules nearly identical to those of the Olympics. Over the next ten days until the closing ceremony on November 26th, fierce competition will unfold across various venues.

 

As this is Japan’s first time hosting the event, it seems to be receiving more coverage in the Japanese media than previous editions. While I was certainly aware of the Games’ name, I discovered I knew little about the history of the Deaflympics and decided to look into it.

 

The history of the Deaflympics actually predates the Paralympics. The first event was held during the 1924 Summer Games in Paris, France, and was organized by the International Committee of Sports for the Deaf (ICSD). It was originally called the “International Silent Games,” but in 2001, it was renamed the “Deaflympics,” combining ‘deaf’ and “Olympics.”

Incidentally, the first Paralympic Games were held in 1960, and the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) was founded in 1989. While the ICSD was once part of the IPC, it became independent in 1995, establishing that athletes with hearing impairments would participate in the Deaflympics rather than the Paralympics.

Currently, the Summer Games (held every four years) and Winter Games (also held every four years) alternate every two years. This Tokyo Games marks the 100th anniversary of the event. Hosting the Games in Japan has apparently been strongly desired by other nations for many years. To date, the Games have been held in 26 countries, with approximately 3,000 athletes participating in this edition. Japan first participated in the 1965 Games in Washington, D.C., USA. At the previous Summer Games held in Brazil, Japan won a record 30 medals.

 

A Japanese women’s basketball player interviewed on the news this morning stated, “Because people with hearing impairments are sensitive to visual information, they have the ability to quickly detect open spaces on the court. This has been a strength even among hearing athletes.” It seems there are skills achievable through heightened senses.

 

Watching the Deaflympics is generally free and requires no advance registration (though entry may be restricted depending on crowding). Parking is unavailable; please use public transportation. Competition schedules and venue locations for each event can be found on the official Tokyo 2025 Deaflympics website.

Additionally, a “Tokyo 2025 Deaflympics Limited Edition Original Wristband” in a different color for each venue will be distributed. Designed with the event’s motif, “cherry blossom petals,” it aims to foster a sense of unity among venues. It’s a bit far from Nagoya, so I envy those in the Kanto area. It should be a valuable experience, so why not consider attending?
