名古屋はしばらく曇り空が続くようで、個人的には気持ちが落ち着く感じがいたします。強い夏の日差しで疲れた目もお休みモードなのか、かすんでいるのか、最近あちらこちらにぶつかっております。いえいえ目のせいにしている場合ではなく、注意力の低下を自覚しなければいけませんね。

先日もふとしたことで結構広い範囲の火傷をしてしまい、どうなることかと思いましたが無事治りました。

 

ところで皆さんは火傷をした時、どのような薬を塗りますか？私の周りでは軽い火傷にはオロナインやワセリンなどを塗る人が多いようです。実家では昔から「紫雲膏（しうんこう）」という薬を塗っていました。濃い紫色ですが赤に近い色の薬なので、絆創膏や包帯から真っ赤な色が透けて見え、周囲からギョッとされることがよくありました。あまりメジャーな薬ではないのか、紫雲膏の色だと言っても分かってもらえないことが多かったです。

 

今回も紫雲膏をたっぷり塗って包帯をしました。洋服などに付着すると紫色がとれなくなるので要注意です。私の体質が紫雲膏に合っているのか、翌日には綺麗に治っていることが多いです。ふと成分を見てみると、「シコン、トウキ、ごま油、ミツロウ、トン脂」とありました。ごま油やミツロウが含まれていることは知っていましたが、トン脂とはもしや豚さんの脂？と少し驚きましたが、漢方などではよく使用されるのだそうです。ちょっと匂いが独特なのはそのせいなのでしょうか？

 

興味が湧いてきたので調べてみますと、実は紫雲膏の起源は江戸時代にまで遡るのだとか。なんとあの華岡青洲が配合した薬だそうです。江戸時代に世界初となる乳がんの手術を行った外科医、華岡青洲が中国・明「外科正宗」に記載されていた「潤肌膏（じゅんきこう）」という皮膚疾患の薬を元に作ったとされています。薬に使われる紫根の「紫」と華岡青洲の幼名である雲平の「雲」をとって紫雲膏と名づけたとか。また紫雲は中国で君子のいるところにたなびく雲という意味もあります。

 

さきほどサラッと書きましたが、華岡青洲は世界で初めて乳がんの手術を行った医師でした。実の妹を乳がんで亡くしたのが研究のきっかけだとされています。手術のための全身麻酔の薬も苦労の末に自ら配合しました。麻酔薬開発の壮絶な物語は有吉佐和子さんの「華岡青洲の妻」という小説で描かれ、また映画やドラマも制作されているのでご存知の方も多いのではないでしょうか。のちに西洋の麻酔薬が日本に入って来たため青洲の麻酔薬は明治時代後半には使われなくなり、その詳しい成分の全容は明らかになっていないのだとか。外国からの情報が少ない時代に自ら麻酔薬を配合を試みるなど、ただ者ではありませんね。

 

また青洲は膏薬治療の研究でも優れた成果を残し、「春林軒膏方便覧」」という本には紫雲膏を含む１４種類の膏薬が記され、青蛇膏、白雲膏、大赤膏、中黄膏など色が付いた薬が多いようです。

紫雲膏の原料の紫根は抗炎症作用や肉芽の発生を促進する作用を利用して薬に使用されるほか、染料にも用いられました。古来日本の宮中では紫色の衣服は権威の象徴とされ、染料の紫根は税として納められていたこともあるほど貴重な植物だったようです。

 

私が使った包帯も濃い紫が付着し、試しに洗ってみましたが色が落ちる気配はありません。そんな昔からほとんど成分が変わらず受け継がれてきた薬だとは知らず、「こんなに色が落ちない薬なんてある？」などと文句を言っておりました。いつも不注意な私の火傷を治してくださり感謝しています。

Nagoya seems to be stuck with cloudy skies for a while, and personally, I find it quite calming. My eyes, tired from the harsh summer sun, seem to be in rest mode—or maybe just blurry—and I keep bumping into things. No, no, I shouldn’t blame my eyes; I need to be aware of my own lack of focus.

Just the other day, I accidentally burned a fairly large area of my skin. I was worried about how it would turn out, but it healed up just fine.

 

By the way, what kind of medicine do you apply when you get burned? Around me, many people use Oronine or Vaseline for minor burns. In my family, we’ve always used a medicine called “Shunko” (紫雲膏). It’s a deep purple, almost red-colored ointment, so it often showed through bandages and tape as a vivid red, startling people around me. It’s not a very well-known ointment, so even when I said it was Shunko, people often didn’t understand what I meant.

This time too, I applied a generous amount of Shunko and bandaged it up. You have to be careful because if it gets on clothes, the purple stain won’t come out. Maybe my body just reacts well to Shunko, but it often heals beautifully by the next day. I happened to look at the ingredients: “Shikon, Toki, sesame oil, beeswax, and pork fat.” I knew it contained sesame oil and beeswax, but “ton fat”—could that be pig fat? I was a bit surprised, but apparently it’s commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine. Could that be why it has such a distinctive smell?

 

My curiosity piqued, I looked it up and discovered Shionko’s origins actually trace back to the Edo period. It turns out it was formulated by none other than Hanaoka Seishu. It’s said that Seishu Hanaoka, the surgeon who performed the world’s first breast cancer surgery in the Edo period, created it based on a skin disease medicine called “Junki-ko” (潤肌膏) described in the Ming Dynasty Chinese text “Surgical Orthodoxy” (外科正宗). The name “Shionko” (紫雲膏) was derived from the “purple” (紫) of the purple root (shikon) used in the medicine and the ‘cloud’ (雲) from Hanaoka Seishu’s childhood name, Unpei. Additionally, “purple cloud” (紫雲) in China also means the clouds that drift where the noble person is.

 

As briefly mentioned earlier, Hanaoka Seishu was the physician who performed the world’s first breast cancer surgery. It is said his research was motivated by the death of his own sister from breast cancer. After much effort, he also formulated the general anesthetic used for the surgery himself. The dramatic story of his anesthetic development is depicted in Sawako Ariyoshi’s novel “The Wife of Hanaoka Seishu,” and has been adapted into films and dramas, so many may be familiar with it. Later, when Western anesthetics entered Japan, Seishu’s formula fell out of use by the late Meiji period, and its exact composition remains unclear. Attempting to formulate anesthetics himself in an era with little foreign information shows he was no ordinary man.

 

Seishu also achieved outstanding results in the study of ointment therapy. His book “Shurin-ken Kō Henbanran” (Compendium of Ointment Treatments) records fourteen types of ointments, including Shion-kō (Purple Cloud Ointment). Many of these ointments were colored, such as Seja-kō (Green Snake Ointment), Hakun-kō (White Cloud Ointment), Daishaku-kō (Great Red Ointment), and Chūō-kō (Middle Yellow Ointment).

The purple root used as a raw material for Shionko ointment was employed in medicine for its anti-inflammatory properties and ability to promote granulation tissue formation. It was also used as a dye. In ancient Japanese imperial courts, purple clothing symbolized authority, and purple root dye was so valuable that it was sometimes paid as a tax.

 

The bandage I used was stained a deep purple. I tried washing it, but the color showed no sign of fading. Unaware that this medicine had been passed down with virtually unchanged ingredients since ancient times, I complained, “Is there really medicine that doesn’t fade this much?” I’m grateful it always heals my careless burns.
