気候も最高のこの3連休、いかがお過ごしでしょうか。

今日、道を歩いておりますと、どこからともなくキンモクセイの香りがほんのり漂ってきたのですが、暑い暑いと言っていてももう10月なんですよね。こんな間にも植物たちは秋の準備をしていたようですね。

 

 

 

 

さてさて、2025年4月13日に開幕した大阪・関西万博ですが、明日の10月13日で閉幕を迎えます。テーマは「いのち輝く未来社会のデザイン」として、国内外のパビリオンをはじめ、会場全体を通して多彩なメッセージが発信されており、未来や社会について改めて考えるきっかけとなりました。

 

日本国際博覧会協会（万博協会）によりますと、大阪・関西万博の一般来場者数が11日時点の推計値で2508万人になったとのこと。明日の13日の閉会式の様子もTVで放映されるようですが、5年ごとに開かれる登録博覧会の次回開催国のサウジアラビアに博覧会国際事務局の旗が引き継がれるようです。

 

それにしても、会場を象徴する大屋根リングや、独特の高揚感に包まれた空気、そして公式キャラクターの「ミャクミャク」などなど、この半年間の関西万博の思い出を振り返るとアフター万博イベントがあるとしても、もうすでに寂しい、万博ロスになる方もおいでではないでしょうか。

 

自分も先月やっと訪れることができたのですが、待ち時間のなどの際に「この前の万博の時は…」なんて言いながらかつての万博の思い出の話をする声が聞こえてきまして、当時の万博の様子、誰と行ってどんな様子だったんだ、どんな時代だったのかなどなど楽しい話し声が聞こえてきました。万博というイベントを通してかつての思い出や時代の様子が共通の思い出として一気に蘇ってくるのですから、万博はかなりの多くの人にとって記憶や印象がとても色濃く残るイベントでもあります。

今回の大阪万博も多くの人の中に印象に残るイベントが一つ増えていくんだろうな…、なんて思いながら後ろの人の会話を聞いておりました。

 

それから次に日本での万博開催があるとすれば、時代や自分はどうなってるのかな…笑、なんて想像するところまでがワンセットなわけですが（もちろん次回もいけるチャンスがあるのだったら行きたい笑）、こうやって次の日本での万博開催を長い時間をかけて待つのも万博の楽しみでもあるのでしょうか。

How are you spending this three-day weekend with perfect weather?

Walking down the street today, the faint scent of osmanthus drifted in from somewhere. Even though we’ve been complaining about the heat, it’s already October. It seems plants have been quietly preparing for autumn all along.

 

Now then, the Osaka-Kansai Expo, which opened on April 13, 2025, will close tomorrow, October 13. With the theme “Designing Future Societies for All,” diverse messages have been conveyed throughout the entire venue, including pavilions from Japan and abroad, providing an opportunity to reconsider the future and society.

 

According to the Japan International Exposition Association (Expo Association), the estimated number of general visitors to the Osaka-Kansai Expo reached 25.08 million as of the 11th. At tomorrow’s closing ceremony on the 13th, the flag of the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) will be handed over to Saudi Arabia, the next host country for the registered exposition held every five years.

 

Looking back on the memories of the Kansai Expo over these past six months—the iconic Grand Roof Ring, the uniquely uplifting atmosphere, and the official mascot “Myaku Myaku”—even with post-expo events planned, some may already feel a sense of loss, experiencing “Expo withdrawal.”

 

I finally managed to visit last month myself. During waiting times, I overheard people saying things like, “Remember the last Expo…” as they reminisced about past expos. For me and others, memories of past Expos—who we went with, what it was like, which pavilions we visited—resurface vividly, along with the atmosphere of that era. Needless to say, the memories and impressions of an Expo are incredibly vivid.

Listening to the conversation behind me, I thought, “This Osaka Expo will surely become another deeply memorable event for many people…”

 

Then, I started imagining what the times and I myself would be like if Japan hosted the next Expo… haha. That whole train of thought is just part of the package (of course, if I get the chance next time, I’d love to go again, haha). But somehow, waiting all this time for the next Expo in Japan has started to feel like part of the fun of the Expo itself. Thank you, Expo. And see you again! Expo.
