久しぶりに朝から気温が上昇して真夏日を感じさせる名古屋です。まだまだ暑い日が続きますね。

そんな中でも少しずつ、季節は確実に進んでいるなぁと感じます。日中の風にも、ほんのりと冷たさを感じるようになり、遅ればせながら彼岸花もチラホラ咲き始めたようです。

彼岸花は地面の温度が下がってくると、それに反応して咲く花なのですが、今年は猛暑の影響で秋の風物詩はまだまだ見頃とはいかないようです。

愛知県内の有名な彼岸花の名所と言えば、童話「ごんぎつね」の作者のふるさとで知られる愛知県半田市の矢勝川が有名です。「ごんぎつね」「手ぶくろを買いに」「おぢいさんのランプ」などの心温まる作品で知られる新美南吉。その生家近くを流れているのが、矢勝川です。

 

 

その矢勝川堤には、毎年秋の彼岸の頃になると、約300万本もの彼岸花が川沿い約1.5kmにわたって咲き誇り、辺り一面を真っ赤に染め上げます。そして今や、日本でも最大規模の彼岸花の群生地になったのだとか。童話「ごんぎつね」の中にある「ひがん花が、赤い布のようにさきつづいて」という一節の風景のように、不思議にも南吉やごんがいるような気がする、そんな場所です。

 

 

まだまだ暑い名古屋なのですが、ほぼ毎日のように「小さな秋」を見つける瞬間が増えてきて、夏が終わってしまうさみしさはあれど、行楽シーズンの秋が訪れることは大人でもワクワクするわけですが、せっかくだからどこかへ出かけなければというような、ちょっと圧みたいなものも感じつつ、なんだかソワソワしてしまいます。

 

もうすでにどこへ行こうかと計画を立てていらっしゃる方も多いかと思いますが、今年の10月はスポーツの日と合わせて3連休があります。もしご予定がお決まりでなければ、覚王山日泰寺周辺では、この3連休中の10/11㈯・12㈰に、今年も「日・タイ文化フェス2025」が開催されますので、ぜひご来訪してみてはいかがでしょうか。

タイ料理と言えば、タイカレー、パッタイ、ガパオライス、トムヤムクン。私は辛いものを食べるとお腹の調子が悪くなってしまうのですが、大のエスニック料理好きの友人は、タイ料理やベトナム料理など食べに行きますと、パクチー増し増しにして、むしゃむしゃ食べてしまうほど…。

It’s been a while since we’ve had a morning like this in Nagoya, with temperatures rising to feel like a midsummer day. The hot days are definitely sticking around.

Even so, I can feel the seasons steadily advancing, bit by bit. There’s a hint of coolness in the daytime breeze now, and belatedly, red spider lilies seem to be starting to bloom here and there.

 

Higanbana flowers bloom in response to the ground temperature dropping, but this year, due to the intense heat, this autumn tradition still seems far from its peak.

When it comes to famous higanbana spots in Aichi Prefecture, the Yagachi River in Handa City is well-known. Handa is famously the hometown of the author of the fairy tale “Gon the Fox.” Nankichi Niimi, known for heartwarming works like “To Buy a Pair of Mittens” and “Grandfather’s Lamp.” The Yagachi River flows near his birthplace.

 

Every year around the autumn equinox, the banks of the Yagachi River are adorned with approximately 3 million red spider lilies blooming along a stretch of about 1.5 kilometers, turning the entire area a vivid crimson. It has now become one of Japan’s largest clusters of red spider lilies. It’s a place where, strangely enough, you might feel Nankichi or Gon from the fairy tale “Gon the Fox” could be there, just like the scene described in the passage: “The red spider lilies bloomed like a continuous red cloth.”

Though Nagoya remains hot, I find myself spotting “little signs of autumn” almost daily now. While there’s a touch of sadness that summer is ending, the arrival of autumn—the season for outings—excites even adults. Yet, I also feel a slight pressure, like I should go somewhere, making me feel restless.

Many of you are probably already planning where to go. This October features a three-day weekend coinciding with Sports Day. If you haven’t made plans yet, the “Japan-Thailand Culture Festival 2025” will be held again this year around Kakuozan Nittaiji Temple on the 3-day weekend, specifically on Saturday, October 11th and Sunday, October 12th. Why not come visit?

Featuring shows of Thailand’s national sport, Muay Thai, Thai dance performances, and stalls selling Thai gourmet food, this year’s Japan-Thailand Culture Festival will be held at night! It looks like you can enjoy it until evening.

When it comes to Thai food, think Thai curry, pad thai, ga pao rice, and tom yum kung. I tend to get an upset stomach when I eat spicy food, but my friend, who absolutely loves ethnic cuisine, goes out for Thai or Vietnamese food and piles on the extra cilantro, devouring it all…
