本日、土用の丑の日。ここ名古屋は夏の日差しが容赦なく照りつける朝ですが、これはうなぎを食べるにはもってこいの日ではないか…などとカーテンを開けながらつぶやいておりました。

 

聞くところによると今年はうなぎの価格が例年より少しお安めと聞きます。今年はウナギの稚魚が昨年の2倍収穫があるようで、来年の養殖うなぎの在庫の調整などもあるようでして、我々にはうれしい価格調整です。このところの物価上昇のニュースばかりなので、うなぎには感謝。

 

それにしても価格にも反映するこのうなぎの稚魚、「白いダイヤ」なんて呼ばれるくらい高額なようでして。それもそのはずマリアナ海溝のあたりで生まれ、海流に乗って東アジアにきた12月から翌年4月の河口にで採取、養殖場で1年から1年半養殖されてようやっと我々の大好きなうな重やひつまぶしとなっていくのですから、すでにウナギの稚魚、生まれたそばから気合が違いますね。

 

ところが、このウナギの稚魚の生体についてはまだまだ解明されていないことが多いようで、うなぎの稚魚の産卵場所がマリアナ海峡辺りだということが解明されたことも2009年と、ここ最近のこと。まだまだ謎多きうなぎの稚魚であります。

 

また、1匹の雌うなぎからは約300万粒の卵が産まれるようですが、不思議なことにうなぎは新月の夜に卵を産みます。新月の夜の闇の中を漂いながらの産卵は、外敵から卵を守るだけではなく月の満ち欠けによる潮の満ち引きと関連していると研究結果もあるようですが、そもそも稚魚があのマリアナ海峡から東アジアまで到達するって生まれたそばからなかなかハードモードではないか。

 

そんなリスクを冒してまでなぜ東アジアを目指すのかそこもわからないのですが、厳しい環境を生き抜ぬき、勝ち残ったうなぎが捕獲され、養殖され、うな重、ひつまぶしか…。

 

今日はそんな状況を経て私の口に運ばれようとするうなぎを味や栄養価も堪能しますが、ハードモードを勝ちぬけた強そうなパワーも一緒にいただくこととします。値下がりに感謝。

Today is the day of the Ox. It is a morning of relentless summer sunshine here in Nagoya, and as I opened the curtains, I was muttering to myself, “This is the perfect day to eat eels…”.

 

I heard that the price of eels is a little lower than usual this year. It seems that this year’s harvest of eel fry is twice as large as last year’s, and there are some adjustments to the stock of farmed eels for next year, which is a nice price adjustment for us. We are thankful for eels, since we have been hearing all the news about the recent price increases.

 

The price of the eel fry, which is also reflected in the price, seems to be so expensive that they are called “white diamonds”. The eel fry are born in the Mariana Trench, and are collected at the mouth of an estuary from December to April of the following year when they come to East Asia on the ocean currents, and then farmed for a year to a year and a half before finally becoming our favorite eels, Unajyu and Hitsumabushi.

 

It was only recently, in 2009, that it was discovered that eel fry spawn in the Mariana Strait area. Eel fry are still a mystery.

 

It seems that one female eel produces about 3 million eggs, and strangely enough, eels lay their eggs on the night of the new moon. Research has shown that spawning while drifting in the darkness of a new moon night not only protects the eggs from foreign enemies but is also related to the ebb and flow of the tide caused by the waxing and waning of the moon.

 

I don’t know why they would take such a risk to go to East Asia, but the eels that survive the harsh environment are caught and farmed, and then served as unaju or hitsu-mabushi….

 

Today, I will enjoy the taste and nutritional value of the eels that are about to be brought to my mouth, but I will also enjoy the power of the eels that have survived the hard mode. Thank you for the price reduction.
