ハロウィンシーズンの午前中、お散歩していましたらプリンセスの仮装をした小さな女の子たちや、頭にかぼちゃのカチューシャをつけたワンちゃん、ジャック・オー・ランタンが飾られたおうち…町中が賑やかな雰囲気で朝から微笑ましい光景をたくさん見ることができました。

 

ハロウィンの思い出といえば・・・学生時代ハロウィン当日が英会話のテストの日で、先生とマンツーマンで英語で会話をするというテストだったのですが、一通り会話が終わった後先生が最後に何か言うことはないか？と聞いてきたのです。

当時の私はもうあの言葉しかないと思い「Trick or Treat」と伝えたら、「ありがとうございましたでしょ」と言われてしまい、恥ずかしい気持ちになったことを覚えています。

 

ちなみに実は授業後にその先生とお会いしたときに、小さいアメとチョコレートをいただいて「さっきはテスト中だったからごめんね！」と言われたことが、とっても嬉しくて今思い出しても心温まる思い出だなと感じます。

 

ハロウィンというと、思い思いの仮装をして街を練り歩くイメージがあるのですが、本来のハロウィンとは調べてみたくなったので皆さまにも少し共有いたしますね。

 

ハロウィンとは、キリスト教の聖なる日のひとつで、１０月３１日の夜にあの世に行った者たちは家に帰ってくることができたという言い伝えがあるのですが、その中には悪霊たちも交じっていたとか。

悪霊たちは作物に悪い影響を与えたり、子供をさらったり、現世の人間に悪いことをすると言われたため、人々は身を守るため仮面や仮装をして仲間に見せかけたり、魔除けの焚火を行ったりしていたと言われているそうです。

 

 

そしてよく玄関などに飾られているジャック・オー・ランタン。これは良い精霊を呼び寄せ、悪霊を追い払うものと言い伝えられています。由来は諸説あるものの、その一つが「ジャック」という名前の男の物語です。

内容は「悪行三昧の人生を送ったジャックは悪魔をだまして死んでも地獄に落ちない契約を結んだが、行いの悪さから天国行きも拒否されてしまった結果、カブをくり抜いて明かりをともしながら安住の地を求めてさまよっている」というもの。

 

この話からもわかりますが、実はもともとかぼちゃではなくカブをくり抜いていたのですね…

そもそもハロウィンは古代ケルトのドゥルイド教で行われていたサウィン祭が起源といわれていて、ケルト人が自然崇拝からキリスト教へと移る過程でカブ→かぼちゃになったということだそうです。

 

そしてあの言葉「Trick or Treat（お菓子をくれなきゃ、いたずらするぞ）」、これにも大きな意味があり、悪霊が家の中に迷い込まないよう、お菓子をを渡すことによって帰ってもらうという魔除けの意味が込められています。日本の節分に少し似ていますよね！

 

ちなみに、ハロウィンの由来などを調べていましたら江戸時代から実はハロウィンは存在していた？！という記事を見つけました。巻物などにタコや魚、大根に化けた人が楽しそうに走り回っている様子が描かれていて賑やかさが伝わってくるものでした。

 

そんな昔から日本人も仮装して楽しんでいたのかと思うと、やはり人間変わらないものなのだとつくづく感じます。

Speaking of Halloween memories… When I was a student, the day of Halloween was the day of the English conversation test, and it was a test to have a one-on-one English conversation with the teacher. don’t you have anything to say? I heard. At that time, I thought that was the only word I could use, so when I said “Trick or Treat,” they said, “Thank you, aren’t you?” I remember feeling embarrassed.

By the way, when I met the teacher after class, he gave me a small candy and chocolate and said, “Sorry, I was in the middle of a test earlier!” .

 

When we think of Halloween, we have the image of people dressing up in whatever costumes they want and parading around town, but I wanted to find out what Halloween really is, so I’d like to share a little with you.

 

Halloween is one of the holy days in Christianity, and legend has it that those who went to the other world on the night of October 31st were able to return home, but among them are evil spirits. It was also mixed. Evil spirits were said to have a bad influence on crops, kidnap children, and do bad things to people in this world. It is said that he used to go there.

 

Jack-o’-lanterns are often displayed at entrances. It is said to attract good spirits and ward off evil spirits. There are various theories about its origin, but one of them is the story of a man named “Jack”. The content is “Jack, who led a life full of evil deeds, tricked the devil into making a contract that he would not go to hell even if he died, but as a result of being refused to go to heaven due to his bad behavior, he cut out a turnip and turned on a light. I am wandering in search of a safe haven.”

 

As you can see from this story, it was actually originally a turnip, not a pumpkin… Halloween is said to have originated from the ancient Celtic Druid festival of Samhain, and it is said that the turnips became pumpkins as the Celts migrated from nature worship to Christianity.

And the word “Trick or Treat” has a big meaning, and it is said that giving sweets will make you go home so that evil spirits don’t wander into your house. It has the meaning of warding off evil. It’s a bit like Setsubun in Japan!

 

By the way, when I was looking into the origin of Halloween, did Halloween actually exist since the Edo period? ! I found an article. People disguised as octopuses, fish, and radishes were depicted on scrolls and other objects running around happily, conveying the liveliness of the area. When I think about how Japanese people have enjoyed dressing up in costumes for a long time, I really feel that human beings are the same.
