みなさま、こんにちは。

オリンピックがついこの間、始まったかと思っていたら、この週末にはもう閉会式ですね。

 

そんな週末の天気予報を見ていると、驚くことに、台風が３つも発生していて、日本に近づいてきているではないですか！

それを見て、私の母は、急いで外に出してある植木を家の中にしまいました。その様子を見た父が、「早々に植木をしまった時は、台風がそれていくよね。いつも。」と笑っていましたが…。どうなることでしょうか。(笑)

 

 

 

台風が３つも一気に訪れることは珍しいことではないんでしょうかね。

台風がどれくらい起こるのか、年平均で見ると、8月は５．７個と言われています。そのうちの3個が一気に発生しているのですから、驚きですよね。

 

ちなみに、台風の定義は『北太平洋南西域の熱帯の海上で発達した熱帯低気圧のうち、さらに発達して最大風速（１０分間平均）が１７ｍ/s以上となったものを指しています。

台風は熱帯の湿った空気を多く含んだ積乱雲が集まってできるため、台風が接近すると、台風周辺を取り巻いている積乱雲によって大雨が起こり、土砂災害や洪水、浸水などの被害を受けやすくなります。』です。

 

では、台風とハリケーンやサイクロンの違いについてはご存じでしょうか？

私は名前だけは知っていたものの、説明できるほど詳しくは知らなかったので、ちょっと調べてみました。(笑)

台風はもともと熱帯低気圧であり、その熱帯低気圧はさまざまな場所で発生します。台風は東経１８０度より東の北東太平洋にある熱帯低気圧で、最大風速が約１７.２m/s以上になったものを言います。

それに対して、ハリケーンは大西洋と、東経１８０度以東の太平洋のものを言い、最大風速が３３ｍ/s以上になったものを指します。

サイクロンも同様で、台風と最大風速に違いはありませんが、台風の発生する場所が、インド洋や南半球のオーストラリア近海で発生したものをサイクロンと呼びます。

知ってしまえばなーんだ、と思いますが、台風、ハリケーン、サイクロンは、全て発生する場所によって、名称が異なるのですね？！

 

 

 

ハリケーンには、名前がついているのは有名ですよね。例えば記憶にのこるのは、「ハリケーン・カトリーナ」とか。

他にも、「マイケル」「ローラ」「テディー」「マリア」など、親しみのある人名で呼ばれています。

ハリケーンに名前を付けるという習慣は、アメリカでは１９５０年代から始まったようです。はじめは気象官が、その奥さんや彼女の名前をハリケーンにつけて呼び始めましたが、その後男女平等の観点から男性名が加わりました。現在は世界気象機関（WMO）が命名を担当するようですよ。

 

 

では、台風にも同じように名前がつけられているのはご存じでしたか？？

今回、発生中の台風9号は「ルピート」、１０号は「ミリネ」、１１号は「ニーダ」という名前だそうです。

いつから名前が付けられていたのか、不思議です。私は全く知りませんでしたが、実は２０００年ごろから現在のような名前が付けられました。そして、それ以前はアメリカが英語の人名をつけていたようです。どちらも知らなかった！本当に驚愕の事実です！！

では、だれがこの名前をつけているのか？それは、北西太平洋または南シナ海の領域で発生した台風に限り、アジア名が付けられるようになり、それをつけているのが、台風委員会に加盟している国なのですって。

そこでは、台風が発生する度に名前を考えているわけではなく、台風委員会の加盟国が持ち寄った１４０個の名前を１～１４０番のリストにして、順番にローテーションするというルールになっているようです。１番の「ダムレイ」から始まり、２番「ハイクイ」、３番「キロギー」と続き、１４０番の「サオラー」の後は先頭の「ダムレイ」に戻ります。

台風の年間発生数は平年２５．６個のため、約５年かけて１４０個の名前が一巡する計算だそうです。

では、日本が提出した名前はどんなものがあるのか気になりませんか？

 

それが、「コイヌ」「ヤギ」「ウサギ」「カジキ」「カンムリ」「クジラ」「コグマ」「コンパス」「トカゲ」「ヤマネコ」というラインナップ。勘のいい方なら、お察しがついたでしょうが、これらはどれも星座の名前から来ているのだそうですよ。

星座の名前を選んだ理由は、特定の個人・法人・地名などではなく、利害関係が生まれにくいためだそうです。でも、ただ適当に星座を選んだわけではなく、アルファベット９文字以内で、各国の人が発音するのに難しくないなどの条件もあるようで、それらをクリアしたものが選ばれているというのもポイントみたいですね。

日本以外では各国、色々な名前を出してきていて、植物や動物の名前や、神話や伝説などに登場する名前などもあるようです。

 

中でもちょっと変わった面白いのがあるので紹介します。

マカオの『バビンカ』。これはマカオでは伝統的な製法で作られる牛乳プリンのことです。

タイの『ブアローイ』も、スイーツを意味する名前で、ココナッツミルクの中に白玉団子が入った、日本のおしるこに似たものです。

台風にスイーツの名前が付くだけで、甘い雨が降ってきそうな気がしませんか。ちょっと美味しそうで微笑ましいですよね。

アメリカの『オーマイス」。これは徘徊を意味する言葉で、台風は予想進路が変わることも珍しくないことから、なんだか一番ぴったりなネーミングに感じます。

 

日本だけが、星座縛りで考えたのでしょうが、各国いろいろなネーミングセンスにお国柄がでるなぁ、と思った平和な午後でした。

Other than Japan, various names have been issued in each country, and it seems that there are names of plants and animals, and names that appear in myths and legends.

 

Among them, there are some strange and interesting ones, so I will introduce them.

Macau’s “Babinca”. This is a milk pudding made by a traditional method in Macau.

Thai “bua loi” is also a name that means sweets, and it is similar to Japanese oshiruko with shiratama dumplings in coconut milk.

Doesn’t it feel like it’s going to rain sweetly just because the typhoon is named after the sweets? It looks a little tasty and smiles.

American “Omais”. This is a word that means wandering, and since it is not uncommon for typhoons to change their expected course, it feels like the most appropriate naming.
