連日W杯やアジア大会などの様々な競技をTVで観戦することができ、どれを観ようか迷うほどです。まさにスポーツの秋ですね。

次回のアジア大会は２０２６年秋、ここ愛知県で開催されるそうです。今から楽しみです。

 

さて本日は古伊万里の染付皿に見入っています。約３００年前とは思えないモダンなデザインに目を奪われます。

 

 

 

 

 

双龍が描かれていますが、緻密な絵というよりは一筆書きで描いたようなシンプルさです。ユーモラスな表情は一見すると人間の顔にも見えてきます。真ん中にどっしりと描かれた円は「月」でしょうか、それとも双龍とよくセットで描かれるという「宝珠」でしょうか。昇り龍と下り龍が宝珠を巡って争っているとも、守っているとも言われています。まさにドラゴンボール？といったところでしょうか。

しかし私の第一印象は陰陽思想を表す太陰太極図（陰陽太極図）でした。色も形も正確には違いますが、ぐるぐる回っているような印象があるからです。

 

 

 

 

調べてみると双龍自体が陰と陽を司っており、陰陽のバランスを調和し、成長や発展の運気を高める縁起物の文様となっていました。ちなみに陰陽とは中国で生まれた思想で、森羅万象、宇宙のあらゆる事物を陰と陽の二つに分類するというもの。太陽のように輝きを放ち外に向かって発展させていくものと、陰にはなるけれども内に向かって充実させていくものから成り立っているということです。両者は対立する存在ではなく、互いを補いながら同時に一つの物事を形つくっているといいます。お互いに引き立て合いながら、陰は行き着くとやがて陽に、陽は行き着くとやがて陰になり、どちらかが欠けてしまえば大きくバランスが崩れてしまうものなのだそうです。

日々の生活の中に取り込むと色々と頭が整理できるかもしれません。

 

また龍の周りには不思議な形の雲のようなものが浮いています。

中国古代の書物（易経）には「雲従龍風従虎」（雲は龍に従い、風は虎に従う）という禅語があるそうです。龍が現れると自然と雲が沸き上がり、虎は風を従えることによって早さと威を増す。立派な君主には自然と有能な臣下が集まることのたとえとされています。

それにしても描かれているのが雲なのだとしたらユニークな形です。なぜか以前綴ったアンリ・マティスの切り絵を思い起こさせます。器の中の世界がぐるぐると永遠に回り続けているようで、見れば見るほど不思議な感覚に襲われます。

 

双龍は京都建仁寺の天井画でも有名ですね。現在も様々な製品のモチーフとして使用され、若者にも人気だそうです。超ロングセラーのデザインといえますね。

Every day we are able to watch the World Cup, Asian Games, and various other competitions on TV, and it is hard to decide which one to watch. It is truly the season of sports, isn’t it?

The next Asian Games will be held here in Aichi Prefecture in the fall of 2026. I am looking forward to it.

 

Today, I am looking at an old Imari plate. The modern design which is hard to believe that it is about 300 years old attracts my eyes.

It is simple as if it was drawn by one stroke rather than a precise picture. At first glance, the humorous expression on the face looks like a human face. Is the circle in the center of the painting a “moon” or a “jewel,” which is often depicted as a set with the twin dragons? It is said that the ascending and descending dragons are either fighting over the jewel or protecting it. Dragon Ball? Dragon Ball?

My first impression, however, was that it was a taiyin taiji diagram (yin-yang taiji diagram), which represents the concept of yin and yang. The color and shape are not exactly the same, but it gives the impression of going around in a circle.

 

When I looked into it, I found that the twin dragons themselves represent yin and yang, and the design was a lucky charm that harmonizes the balance of yin and yang and enhances the luck of growth and development. Incidentally, yin-yang is an idea born in China that classifies all things in the universe into two categories, yin and yang. The yin and the yang are composed of things that shine like the sun and develop outwardly, and things that are inwardly fulfilling, although they are yin. They are not in opposition to each other, but complement each other and form one thing at the same time. While complementing each other, yin eventually becomes yang, and yang eventually becomes yin, and if either one is lacking, the balance will be greatly disrupted.

If you incorporate this into your daily life, you may be able to clear your mind in various ways.

There is also a mysterious cloud-like shape floating around the dragon.

In an ancient Chinese book (I Ching), there is a Zen phrase “cloud follows dragon, wind follows tiger” (cloud follows dragon, wind follows tiger). When a dragon appears, clouds naturally boil up, and a tiger follows the wind to increase its speed and authority. It is said to be a metaphor for the fact that a worthy monarch naturally attracts capable subjects.

If it is a cloud that is depicted in the painting, it is a unique shape. For some reason, it reminds me of Henri Matisse’s paper cutouts, which I wrote about earlier. The more I look at it, the more I am struck with a sense of wonder.

The twin dragons are also famous for the ceiling painting of Kenninji temple in Kyoto. It is still used as a motif on various products and is popular among young people. It can be said to be a very long-selling design.
