今朝の通勤は本当に大変でありした。昨日ここ愛知県でも、突然のゲリラ豪雨に見舞われ大変な状況だったのですが、今朝もまた明け方の激しい雷と豪雨で目が覚めました。

 

その後も、時折激しい雨が降ったり止んだりと、非常に安定しないお天気。気をつけながらの車通勤でなんとかたどり着いたものの残念なことにどこの駐車場も満車。雨の中遠い駐車場をみつけ、そこからの徒歩通勤という今朝はなんとも悲しき状況でありました。（まあ、こんなことぐらいは大したことではありません。）

まだまだ安定しない気象状況ですので、みなさまどくれぐれもお気をつけくださいませ。

 

 

 

 

さあ、気を取り直してまいりましょう。

 

こういったお仕事に携わっておりますと、日頃のオークションのニュースに興味があり、時折チェックをするのですが、昨日もひとつ面白いニュースが目に留まりましたよ。

 

ある女性がニューヨークのチャリティーショップで購入したところ、1枚1.99ドル（約264円）の4枚の陶器の皿が、実はあの有名な画家パブロ・ピカソが1955年に作った本物の皿であることが判明したということでありました。その女性はこの皿をオークションサイトに委託出品したところ1枚、25,000ドル（約330万円）で落札されたというのですから、なんとも夢のあるお話ですね。

 

ピカソのお皿はまあまあ出回っていると聞いたことはあるのですが、それはピカソが陶芸作品に関しては工房に作品の複製を許可していたようでして（数は限定しております）陶工がオリジナル作品を複製して量産化できるようにしていたようであります。

ですが、今回見つかったお皿は本物のピカソ作のお皿。

 

そもそもピカソが陶芸を本格的に始めたのは、第二次世界大戦の後でして、暗く辛い時代だった戦争がようやく終わり、1946年の夏にピカソは恋人とヴァカンスで南仏へ海水浴に出掛けるところからはじまります。

 

その途中にて、ヴァローリスという陶器の町を訪れたのが始まりで、ピカソはそこでラミエ夫妻に出会います。彼らは「マドゥラ工房」という陶芸の工房を経営していて「私たちの窯で、一度陶芸を作ってみない？」とピカソを誘い、その時にピカソがちょっと土をこねて陶器を2～3点作ったんですが、ピカソはその作品を気に入って、それが本格的に陶芸を始めるきっかけだったようであります。

 

翌年の1947年には、なんと早速ヴァローリスに移り住んで、1947～48年にかけては数百点もの陶器作品を作っておりますので、さすが天才、のめり込んだ時の集中力と行動力も天才ですね。

 

それはそうと難解な作品が多いイメージなのですが、今回発見されたお皿もそうなのですが彼がつくる陶器は絵画と比べ、テーマや様式の「わかりやすさ」がすごく意識されているのが特徴的。

そして、テーマも明るくて親しみやすいものが多く、神話の登場人物や食べ物、動物など彼が好きだったものが登場しますので、陶器に関しては、どことなくヴァローリスに移り住んだ彼の解放感と本来彼が大好きだったものも表現しているように思えます。

 

また、陶器は絵画と違って、自分一人の力で作るのではなくて、陶工たちと一緒に働きながら作るというスタイル、こちらにも影響があるのでしょうか。ピカソが一緒に制作していたマドゥラ工房では、高級な陶器ではなく安い日用的な陶器が作られておりますので、あえてそういう工房と一緒に働くことをピカソは選んでおりますので、これまでの「一人きりで閉じこもって難しい絵を描いている芸術家」というそれまでの姿からの脱却と共に、そこにも解放感と本来の自分の表現を後押ししたのでしょうか。

 

陶芸制作を通して、きっと今までの制作活動では経験できなかった社会や民衆の文化に関りを通し、いつも新たな境地を模索する彼のまた新たな境地が私には陶芸から感じ取れます。

ずぶの素人がピカソのことを語るとは大変おこがましいですので、このくらいにしておきましょう。

 

それにしても、チャリティーショップやリサイクルショップ、スリフトショップでは時にお宝が眠っていることがあるようでして、夢がありますね。

女性もそのお宝を掘り当てておりますし、みなさまもご実家ご自宅に、実は！というお宝が眠っているやもしれませんので、今一度物置の奥深くなど宝探し、してみてください。

This morning’s commute to work was really tough. Yesterday, here in Aichi Prefecture, we were also hit by a sudden guerrilla downpour, and this morning, I woke up to heavy thunder and downpour again at dawn.

The weather has been very unstable since then, with heavy rain falling on and off from time to time. I managed to get to work by car while being careful, but unfortunately all the parking lots were full. I found a distant parking lot in the rain and walked to work from there. (Well, it’s no big deal.)

The weather conditions are still unstable, so please be careful.

 

Now, let’s get back on track.

 

As I am involved in this kind of work, I am interested in the daily auction news and check it from time to time, and yesterday, one interesting news item caught my attention.

 

A woman purchased four ceramic plates for $1.99 each at a charity store in New York, and they turned out to be genuine plates made by the famous artist Pablo Picasso in 1955. The woman consigned the plates to an auction site, where they were sold for $25,000 (about 3.3 million yen) each.

 

I have heard that Picasso’s plates have been circulating fairly well, but it seems that Picasso allowed his studio to reproduce his ceramic works (in limited numbers) so that the potters could reproduce the original works and mass-produce them.

However, the plate found this time was a genuine Picasso plate.

 

Picasso started to make ceramics after World War II, when he and his girlfriend went to the south of France for a vacation in the summer of 1946 after the dark and painful war was finally over.

 

On the way, he visited the pottery town of Vallauris, where he met Mr. and Mrs. Ramier. They ran a pottery studio called “Madura Studio” and asked Picasso if he would like to try making ceramics in their kiln. Picasso liked their work, and it seems that it was the beginning of his serious interest in ceramics.

 

The next year, 1947, he moved to Vallauris and made hundreds of ceramic works between 1947 and 1948, so he was indeed a genius in terms of concentration and action when he got into it.

 

Although many of his works have an image of being difficult to understand, his ceramics, including the plates discovered this time, are characterized by a much greater awareness of “clarity” in theme and style compared to his paintings.

The themes are often bright and friendly, and his favorite things, such as mythological characters, food, and animals, appear in his pottery.

 

Also, unlike painting, pottery is not made by one’s own efforts, but by working with potters, and I wonder if there is an influence here as well. The Madura Studio, where Picasso worked together, made inexpensive daily-use ceramics, not high-end ceramics, and Picasso dared to work with such a studio. I wonder if he encouraged a sense of liberation and expression of his true self there as well.

 

Through his ceramic works, I can sense that Picasso is always searching for new ground through his involvement in society and popular culture, which he could not have experienced in his previous works. (It is very presumptuous for an amateur to talk about Picasso, so I will leave it at that.)

 

) But sometimes there are treasures to be found in charity stores, recycle stores, and thrift stores, and it is a dream come true.

Women have also found such treasures, and you may have some treasures at your parents’ house, too! So, please try to look for treasures deep in the storeroom once again.
