Hello everyone, this is Staff Y.

It seems as if more and more people are moving around in March. I am a staff member who commutes to work by car, but due to the many road construction projects at the end of the fiscal year and the large number of cars, it took me longer than usual to get to work, which made me a little bit nervous. This morning I reminded myself to drive safely.

Since it is that time of year when you can’t sit still, some of you may be planning to go on a trip.

The other day, we had a visitor from out of town who was looking forward to a spring trip, and this time I was on the side of hospitality. Unfortunately, he could only stay in Nagoya for one day, so I thought about it a lot… I decided to show them around Nagoya Castle, which is a popular sightseeing spot in Nagoya. I would never visit there unless it was something like this, so I was looking forward to it.

So here I am, at Nagoya Castle.

Let me give you some basic information about Nagoya Castle….

Nagoya Castle was built by Ieyasu Tokugawa in 1615. Did you know that? Nagoya Castle was built by Tokugawa Ieyasu. When I was interviewing various people for a TV program on street lights, some of them answered “Nobunaga Oda,” and even local people tend to get confused because the names of castles built during the Warring States period and military commanders were often replaced. In fact, “Tokugawa Ieyasu” has a stronger image of Edo Castle.

Nagoya Castle, as you know, has that golden orca. The castle boasted the largest floor area of any castle in history, and was designated as National Treasure No. 1 because of its gorgeous Honmaru Palace and its function as a fortress with an iron fortification.
However, Nagoya Castle’s history has not been smooth sailing. Most of the buildings were destroyed by fire in an air raid on Nagoya in May 1945, and only six buildings, including the southwest corner turrets and southeast corner turrets, have survived unchanged since the days of the Owari clan.
However, in 1959, the five-story main keep and the small keep with golden ornamentation were reconstructed, restoring the dignity of the past. Unfortunately, due to earthquake resistance issues, the keep is currently closed to visitors. You can’t climb up the keep…what a pity. However, the Honmaru Goten was completed in 2018, and you can visit it.

The Honmaru Goten, which was rebuilt and completed in 2018, was originally designated as National Treasure No. 1 as a castle fortification and was called “the masterpiece of the modern castle palace,” but unfortunately it was destroyed by fire due to the war. Unfortunately, it was destroyed by fire in the war. However, documents, measured drawings, old photographs, and barrier paintings have been left behind, and the restoration work began in 2009 and was completed in 2018, faithfully following these documents.

Now that we have been there, let’s go sightseeing together.

This is the existing gold-ground barrier painting “Bamboo Forest with Leopard and Tiger” that was displayed at the entrance.

This is the entranceway, but it is a room waiting for visitors to meet. This room has been restored, but as a commoner, I feel somewhat uncomfortable waiting in the gilded room…

Omote-shoin. This is the largest audience room in Honmaru Goten. It is said that this room is decorated with the formal sitting room decorations, such as the floor, a shelf with a different shape, and an attached shoin and a ledger stand. There are several such audience rooms in Honmaru Goten, all with different styles, but all serious.

Kamarakuden. It is said that the building was enlarged for the third shogun Iemitsu’s visit to Kyoto. The building is extravagant. Although they are restorations, the paintings on the walls such as “Imperial Vessels” and “Plum, Bamboo, and Bird in Snow” were done by Tanyu Kano.

I entered the main hall with a light heart, thinking, “It’s just a restoration, right?” But by the time they put on their shoes at the exit of the hall, most of them were in a daze, impressed that the restoration was more serious than they had expected. By the time they put on their shoes at the exit after the tour, most of them are still wearing the shoes, saying, “The restoration was more serious than I had expected….

Although we do not know what the original building looked like before it was destroyed by fire, the seriousness with which the wooden architecture of that time was restored using today’s technology is very evident, and we can imagine that it probably looked like this when it was first built.

I imagine that it probably looked like this when it was first built. If you want to be astonished, I recommend you visit Nagoya this spring to see for yourself.

If you do, please stop by the Fukousha Antique Art Gallery as well.

Have a good day.
