根津美術館の創設者は、東武鉄道の社長などを務めた実業家・初代根津嘉一郎（1860～1940）。若い頃から古美術品に関心を寄せていたようです。明治29年（1896）東京に本拠を移すと、実業家、政治家として腕を振るい、また教育界にもその活躍の場を広げるかたわら、茶の湯にいそしむようになると、美術品の蒐集にはさらに拍車がかかります。その蒐集ぶりは豪快を極めたと語り草にも。そして、それらのコレクションを単に秘蔵するのではなく、「衆と共に楽しむ」ことが初代嘉一郎の願いだったようです。

 

そんな彼が蒐集した日本・東洋の古美術品コレクションを保存し展示するために、昭和15年、根津美術館は開館致します。美術館の建屋は、戦災、老朽化などのため幾度となく再建増築をしております。ここ最近ですと平成18年より3年半をかけたこのたびの新創工事。以前の新館を建物免震の収蔵庫に改築することからはじまり、3つの倉庫と旧本館を取り壊して、新たな展示館（本館）を建設するなど大規模なものとなりました。

 

その新創された和風家屋を思わせる大屋根が印象的な本館は、現代日本を代表する建築家隈研吾氏の設計によるものでして、この隈研吾作品もみたいなというのも訪れたい理由の一つでありました。

 

 

地上2階・地下1階ですが、開放的な構造。延べ床面積約4000㎡で、エントランスからホール、そしてそれに続くスペースには、特別展用のギャラリーのみならず、多岐にわたる当館の所蔵品をご覧いただくために、趣の異なる6つのギャラリーが設けられています。隈研吾氏の今までみてきた設計と比べると、館内に木材などはあまり使われていませんし、どちらかというと鋼材を使ったとってもすっきりとクールな印象を受けました。

 

 

 

さらに本館から一歩外に出ると、そこには4棟の茶室を含む17,000㎡におよぶ庭園が。そちらのお庭をも美術館の作品であるかのようにとりいれた設計になっており、また、こちらのお庭が本当に素晴らしいのには驚きました。庭師の方が常に管理されているようですね。ささやかに植えられた庭園の岩の間の植物も、さも自然に植栽しており、これは細部にまで手を掛けたお庭だなというのが所々にわかります。

また園内には、最近流行の美術館カフェ、NEZUCAFÉ（ここは是非訪れてくださいね。素敵です。）にて、庭に触れながら静かな時間を過ごすこともできます。

まさに、コレクションを単に秘蔵するのではなく、「衆と共に楽しむ」ことが初代嘉一郎の願い、を現代に形にしたような美術館でしょうか。

The building of the museum has been rebuilt and expanded many times due to war damage and aging, and recently it has taken three and a half years since 2006 for the new construction. Starting with the renovation of the former new building into a seismic isolated storage, the three warehouses and the old main building were demolished and a new exhibition hall (main building) was constructed.

 

The main building, which has an impressive large roof reminiscent of the newly created Japanese-style house, was designed by Kengo Kuma, a leading architect in modern Japan. It was one.

 

 

 

It has 2 floors above ground and 1 floor below ground, but it has an open structure. With a total floor area of ​​about 4000 m2, the space from the entrance to the hall and the space that follows it has not only a gallery for special exhibitions, but also six galleries with different tastes so that you can see the wide variety of the museum’s collections. increase. Compared to Kengo Kuma’s design so far, wood is not used much in the hall, and I got the impression that it is rather refreshing and cool using steel.

 

If you step outside the main building, you will find a 17,000 m2 garden that includes four tea rooms. The garden was designed to be a work of a museum, and I was surprised that this garden was really wonderful. It seems that the gardener is always in control. The plants between the rocks in the small garden are also planted naturally, and you can see here and there that this is a garden with a lot of attention to detail.
