急な冷え込みで、寝具や着るものの支度に慌てふためいております。気温が下がることは予報で分かっていたものの寒さを実感しないと重い腰をなかなか上げられませんでした。それにしましても温かい布団にくるまって眠るのはなんとも気分が安らぎます。まぁそんな悠長なことを言っていられるのも冬本番前の今だけかもしれませんが…。

 

さて、先日耳を疑うニュースが飛び込んできました。初めはフェイクニュースかとも思いましたが、パリのルーブル美術館で盗難事件が発生したとのこと。しかも開館直後の白昼堂々の犯行だそうで、そんなことが可能なのかとしばらく状況が飲み込めませんでした。ルーブル美術館は美術館でありながら世界遺産に登録されている宮殿でもあるため、外に柵をつけるのが難しいともいわれています。ニュース映像では、引っ越しで使われるようなハシゴクレーン車がそのまま放置され、電動カッターで切り取られた窓が写っており、現実に起こったことなのだと納得しました。ほんの数分の出来事だったようです。

 

今回、王室の宝飾品などが展示されている「ギャラリー・アポロン」から９点の宝飾品が被害に遭いました。９点といってもそれぞれ１９世紀フランス王室に関わる贅を尽くした品々です。２点は既に発見されたという情報もありますが定かではありません。発見されたとされる１点はナポレオン３世の妻のウジェニー皇后の王冠で、金色の鷲と５６個のエメラルド、１３５４個のダイヤモンドがあしらわれているそうです。想像を絶する豪華さですね。

盗まれた品々は宝石自体の価格だけではなく、辿ってきた歴史や文化的観点からみても計り知れない価値がある宝飾品ばかりです。

 

他に被害に遭ったのは、同じくウジェニー皇后が所有していた大型のリボン型のブローチ、「聖遺物容器」のブローチ、ティアラです。ティアラは２１２個の真珠、１９９８個のダイヤモンド、９９２個のローズカットダイヤモンドがあしらわれています。

 

またマリー・アメリ―王妃（フランス最後の国王ルイ・フィリップの妻）とオルタンス王妃（ナポレオン１世の妻の連れ子）が所有していたサファイアのティアラ、ネックレス、イヤリング（片方？）。

 

マリー・ルイーズ皇后（ナポレオン１世の２番目の妻）のエメラルドのネックレスとイヤリング一対。ネックレスにあしらわれているのはエメラルド３２個、ダイヤモンド１１３８個。もう宝石の数の多さに麻痺してきましたね。ちなみに中央のエメラルドは１３．７５カラット！だそうです。こちらの宝石はナポレオン御用達の宝石職人であるマリ・エティエンヌ・ニトにより作られ、のちのフランスの宝石ブランドCHAUMET（ショーメ）のルーツとされています。

あまり宝石に興味がある方ではありませんが、写真を見るだけでもその美しさに目を奪われてしまいます。

 

過去にはあの名画「モナ・リザ」も盗難の被害に遭いました。１９１１年、イタリアの画家ビンセンツォ・ペルージャが「絵画を故郷へ戻す」という名分で美術館に一晩隠れたのち、上着の下に「モナ・リザ」を忍ばせて立ち去りました。２年間自宅に隠していましたが、フィレンツェのホテルで無事発見されることとなりました。

 

宝石は加工がたやすく、現状のまま戻ってくるのは難しいのではとも言われていますが、どうか奇跡が起こらないものかと願っております。

The sudden cold snap has me scrambling to prepare bedding and clothing. Even though the forecast warned of dropping temperatures, I couldn’t quite bring myself to act until I actually felt the chill. Still, there’s nothing quite like curling up in a warm futon for a peaceful night’s sleep. Well, I suppose I can afford to be so leisurely only now, before winter truly sets in…

 

Now, the other day, some unbelievable news hit me. At first, I thought it might be fake news, but apparently, there was a theft at the Louvre Museum in Paris. What’s more, it happened in broad daylight, right after the museum opened. I couldn’t wrap my head around how that was even possible. The Louvre is not just a museum; it’s also a palace registered as a World Heritage Site, which apparently makes it difficult to install fences around the exterior. News footage showed a ladder crane truck, the kind used for moving, left abandoned on site, and a window cut out with an electric saw. That’s when I realized it was real. It all happened in just a few minutes.

 

This time, nine pieces of jewelry were stolen from the Galerie Apollon, where royal jewels are displayed. While nine pieces may sound like a lot, each is an extravagant item connected to the French royal family of the 19th century. There are reports that two pieces have already been found, but this is not confirmed. One piece said to have been recovered is the crown of Empress Eugénie, wife of Napoleon III. It is said to be adorned with a golden eagle, 56 emeralds, and 1,354 diamonds. The sheer opulence is beyond imagination.

The stolen items are jewels of immeasurable value, not only for the gems themselves but also for their history and cultural significance.

 

Other items stolen include a large ribbon-shaped brooch owned by Empress Eugénie, a “reliquary” brooch, and a tiara. The tiara is adorned with 212 pearls, 1,998 diamonds, and 992 rose-cut diamonds.

 

Also stolen were a sapphire tiara, necklace, and earring (one piece?) that belonged to Queen Marie-Amélie (wife of France’s last king, Louis-Philippe) and Queen Hortense (stepdaughter of Napoleon I’s wife).

 

An emerald necklace and matching pair of earrings that belonged to Empress Marie Louise (Napoleon I’s second wife). The necklace features 32 emeralds and 1,138 diamonds. The sheer number of gems is almost overwhelming. Incidentally, the central emerald is said to be 13.75 carats! This piece was crafted by Marie-Étienne Nitot, jeweler to Napoleon, and is considered the origin of the later French jewelry house CHAUMET.

 

In the past, even the famous painting “Mona Lisa” fell victim to theft. In 1911, Italian painter Vincenzo Peruggia hid in the museum overnight under the pretext of “returning the painting to its homeland,” then slipped the “Mona Lisa” under his coat and left. He hid it at his home for two years, but it was safely recovered at a hotel in Florence.

 

It’s said that since jewels can be easily altered, it’s difficult for them to be returned in their original state. Still, we can only hope for a miracle.
