あっという間に今日から5月です。そして今日5月1日は、2019年に元号が「平成」から「令和」に変わった日でもありますね。令和も気づけば7年。「令和」の元号発表の様子は、記憶力に自信がなくなってきた私でもまだ鮮明に覚えております。

言わずと知れず、日本では天皇お一人につき元号を一つ制定する「一世一元の制」が施行されておりますので、第126代・徳仁天皇が即位され、元号が令和となりました。元号「令和」は、日本初の元号「大化」から数えて248番目であり、『万葉集』の一節から採用されました。当時も話題になりましたが、日本の古典から元号が選定されたのは初めてのこと。ちなみに、元号に使われている文字の選定回数は、「令」は初めて、「和」は20回目となっておりました。

 

 

そして、今日5月1日は、雑節のひとつ、立春から数えて88日目の「八十八夜（はちじゅうはちや）」でもあります。茶摘みの光景を見たことがなくても、「な～つ～も～ち～かづ～く　は～ちじゅ～う　は～ち～や」の歌詞を聴いたことがある方も多いのではないでしょうか。

茶摘みの歌にもあるように、昔はこの頃を春と夏の境目として、新茶を摘んだり種まきをしたりする農業の目安ともしていました。

江戸時代の農家の日記には、八十八夜の別れ霜を過ぎて、木綿を蒔く、干鰯(ほしか)を買って干し、粉にして田畑の肥料にする、杉苗を植える、さらに女性は茶摘みをするなどと記され、この日以降は霜が降りることもなく、各地域とも本格的な農作業の時期の目安となったようです。

 

新茶の時期は4月下旬から5月初旬ですが、なかでも八十八夜に摘み採られた新茶を飲むと長生きできると言われ、縁起のいいものとして古来より特別に扱われてきました。

また、八十八は組み合わせると「米」という字になることや、末広がりの「八」が重なることから、豊作や長寿を願う大切な日としてお祝いされていたそうです。

 

もうすぐ端午の節句もやってきます。柏餅と一緒に新茶の香りを楽しむのもいいかもしれません。そんなに長生きしたいわけではないけれど、どうせなら自分好みのお茶を見つけてみたいなと思います。

May has come and gone in the blink of an eye. And today, May 1, is also the day when the original name of Japan changed from “Heisei” to “2021” in 2019. It has been seven years since we changed to “Heisei” in 2025. I still vividly remember the announcement of the new year’s name “2021,” even though I am losing confidence in my memory.

As is well known, Japan has adopted the “Issei Ippongen System,” in which each emperor has one era name, so the 126th Emperor Tokujin came to the throne and the era name became “2025. The era name “2025” was the 248th in Japan since the country’s first era name “Taika,” and was adopted from a passage in the Manyoshu (The Anthology of Myriad Leaves). Although it was a hot topic at the time, this is the first time that an era name has been selected from a Japanese classic. Incidentally, this was the first time for the character “令” and the 20th time for the character “wa” to be selected for use in the era name.

 

 

 

Today, May 1, is also the 88th day counting from Risshun (the first day of spring), one of the miscellaneous days of the year, or “88th night”. Even if you have never seen the scene of tea picking, you may have heard the lyrics of the song “Natsu-mo~chi-kazu~ku hachiju~u hachi-ya”.

As in the song about tea picking, in the old days, this period was regarded as the border between spring and summer, and was also used as a guide for agriculture to pick new tea leaves and sow seeds.

In the diaries of farmers in the Edo period (1603-1867), it is written that after the frost on the 88th night, people sowed cotton, bought dried sardines, dried them, ground them into powder, and used them as fertilizer for the fields, planted cedar seedlings, and women also picked tea.

 

 

The new tea season is from late April to early May, and it is said that drinking tea picked on the 88th day of the month will help you live longer, so it has been treated as a symbol of good luck since ancient times.

Also, because the number 88 when combined forms the character for “rice” and the number eight, which is the last of the eight, overlaps, it was celebrated as an important day to wish for a bountiful harvest and long life.

 

Tango-no Sekku will soon arrive. It might be a good idea to enjoy the aroma of fresh green tea with Kashiwa Mochi. It is not that I want to live that long, but I would like to find my favorite tea anyway.
