骨董品や古美術の装飾でよく見られる龍。

古くはギリシャ神話から先日ブログでも登場したポケモンまで、龍は人々を魅了してやまないキャラクターのようですね。

 

 

 

 

 

地域や時代によって悪役になったり守護神になったりしますが、水に関わっているということは概ね共通しているようです。

架空の生き物にも関わらず、子供の頃からなじみのある龍。

神社の手水舎で龍の口から出る水に恐る恐るひしゃくを近づけたり、「日本昔ばなし」のオープニングで龍に乗っている子供が落ちないかハラハラしたり…。

得体の知れない恐ろしさを感じておりました。

 

神社だけでなく寺院においても守護神として天井に龍が多く描かれています。

こちらは撮影可能な京都大徳寺 龍源院の襖絵の龍。

 

 

 

 

やはり一瞬身のすくむ思いがします。

これらの日本の龍は、中国の龍の絵を学んで描いたものだそうです。

中国では龍は皇帝のシンボルであり、北京の紫禁城には龍の装飾で溢れています。

秦の始皇帝は史記の中で「祖龍」と称されました。

 

また「逆鱗（げきりん）に触れる」という言葉は、龍の喉の下の逆さまに生えた鱗にふれるということから、元は天子の怒りに触れるという意味でした。

ちなみに五爪の龍は皇帝のみが使用できる威厳の証で、宮殿の装飾や衣装に使われていました。

普通は三爪か四爪だそうです。

大徳寺龍源院の龍は三爪ですね。

 

また龍はあらゆる生き物の祖であり、九つの生き物が合体しているとも言われています。

９は中国語で「九(jiu）」と表記しますが、永遠の意味を持つ「久(jiu）」と同じ発音です。そのため中国では「九」は永遠を意味し、「天の数」とされています。

角は鹿

頭は駱駝（らくだ）

目は兎または鬼

からだ/うなじは大蛇

腹はみずち（伝説上の動物。巨大ハマグリという説）

鱗は鯉

爪は鷹

掌（たなごころ）は虎

耳は牛

 

まるで戦隊モノのヒーローのようですね。

どれだけの想いが龍に込められているのでしょう。

 

ちなみにですがこちらは先ほどの大徳寺龍源院にある日本の寺院最小の坪庭とされる「東滴壺（とうてきこ）」。

Dragons are often seen in antiques and antique decorations.

From ancient Greek mythology to Pokemon, which appeared in our blog the other day, dragons seem to be characters that never cease to fascinate people.

 

Depending on the region or time period, they can be villains or guardian deities, but they seem to generally share the same connection to water.

Despite being a fictional creature, the dragon has been familiar to us since childhood.

We fearfully approach the water coming out of the dragon’s mouth with a ladle at the hand-watering basin in a shrine, or we are worried that the child riding the dragon in the opening scene of “Once Upon a Time in Japan” might fall off… We have always felt a sense of fearlessness.

I felt the fear of the unknown.

Not only in shrines, but also in temples, dragons are often depicted on the ceiling as guardian deities.

This is a dragon painted on a sliding door in Ryogenin temple of Daitokuji temple in Kyoto, where you can take pictures.

 

It is still a momentary shock to the eye.

These Japanese dragons are said to have been painted by learning from Chinese dragon paintings.

In China, the dragon is the symbol of the emperor, and the Forbidden City in Beijing is filled with dragon decorations.

Qin Shi Huangdi, the first emperor of the Qin Dynasty, was referred to as the “Ancestral Dragon” in the Histories.

The phrase “to touch the upside-down scales” originally meant to touch the wrath of the emperor, since the scales grew upside down under the dragon’s throat.

Incidentally, the five-clawed dragon was a sign of dignity reserved for emperors, and was used for palace decorations and costumes.

Normally, they were three- or four-clawed.

The dragon in Ryogenin of Daitokuji Temple has three claws.

 

It is also said that dragons are the ancestors of all creatures and that nine creatures are combined.

The number nine is written in Chinese as “nine (jiu),” which has the same pronunciation as “jiu” meaning eternity. Therefore, in China, “nine” means eternity and is considered the “number of heaven.

 

The horns are deer

The head is a camel

Eyes are rabbit or ogre

The body/nape is a serpent

The belly is a mizuchi (legendary animal, said to be a giant clam). (Legend has it that it is a giant clam)

Scales are carp

Claws are hawk

Palm is tiger

Ears are cows

 

It looks like a hero of a sentai (military) character.

I wonder how much thought is put into the dragon.

Incidentally, this is the smallest tsuboniwa (smallest garden in a temple in Japan) in Ryogenin Temple of Daitokuji Temple, which I mentioned earlier.
