今朝はカラッと爽やかな気候で機嫌よく出勤いたしましたが、日中はぐんぐんと気温が上がり日差しが目に痛いほどでした。憂いても仕方のないことですが最近の昼夜の寒暖差、堪える年齢になってきたと実感しております。

この年齢になってお恥ずかしい話ですが、私ずっと誤用していた言葉を昨日発見いたしました。五月晴れ（さつきばれ）です。５月の晴れた日を表す言葉だと疑っていなかったのですが、五月晴れの「さつき」は旧暦の「皐月」から来ており、６月の梅雨の時期の晴れた日を指すのですね。

 

 

 

 

しかし現在では５月の爽やかな晴れの日を指す言葉としても使われるとのことですが、紛らわしいためニュースなどではあまり使用されないとのこと。

そういえば「五月雨（さみだれ）」は梅雨の雨を指し、「五月雨式に（さみだれしきに）」は梅雨の雨のように物事が断続的に続いて行われるという意味でした。そこは梅雨をイメージしていた自分が不思議です。

 

さて、ここ数日世界の注目の的となっている「コンクラーベ」。全カトリック教会の最高司祭となるローマ教皇を選出する「教皇選挙」が現在行われています。カトリック教徒ではありませんが、世界を巻き込む壮大な選挙には興味をそそられずにはいられません。日本では「コンクラーベ」という言葉の響きが日本語の「根競べ」と重なり、２００５年のヨハネ・パウロ２世の死去に伴う選挙あたりから広く知られるようになったのではないでしょうか。

コンクラーベという言葉が使われたのは１２６８年の教皇選挙からだといわれています。ラテン語に由来し、「クム」が「～と共に」、「クラ―ビス」が「鍵」を意味し、「鍵とともに」という訳になるそうです。

現在は皇居選挙はシスティーナ礼拝堂で行われますが、１２６８年はイタリアのビデルボという地で行われ、イタリア派とフランス派に分断され、なかなか合意に至らず３年間空位が続いたとか。業を煮やしたビデルボの人たちは枢機卿たちを宮殿に閉じ込め、鍵を閉めてパンと水だけを渡し、武装した人たちが城を取り囲み拘束した結果、１２７１年９月にイタリアの教皇が選ばれとのことです。その後、選挙を長引かせないために教皇選挙の規則が作られたと言われています。

 

現在ではいずれかの候補者が、参加する枢機卿の少なくとも３分の２以上の票を得るまで続けられことになっており、昨日の１回目の選挙では選出に至らず、黒煙が上がりました。新教皇が選出された場合には白煙が上がり鐘の音が響き渡ります。

今回投票する枢機卿の出身国は前回から約２０カ国増え７０カ国に上り、「史上最も国際的なコンクラーベ」とも言われているそうです。

 

決まるまで…とは、素人考えでは何とも不思議な感じがするのですが、頑として投票する人を変えない枢機卿と変えない枢機卿がいるいうことでしょうか。全員が毎回変えていたら何日たっても決まらないように思うのですが。

 

昨年アカデミー賞８部門でノミネートされた映画「教皇選挙」が各地で上映され話題となっていますね。連綿と続いてきたこの選挙儀式が宗教の枠を超えて人々を引き付けているようです。コンクラーベの模様を完全再現しているといわれており、映画を観れば色々と疑問に思うこともスッキリするのでしょうか。

個人的には教皇選挙と聞くと映画化もされたダン・ブラウン著書の「天使と悪魔」をまず思い浮かべます。面白くて一気に読んだのを覚えています。トムハンクス主演の映画も迫力がありました。

映画は記録的な興行収入を達成しましたが、宗教的な理由から国によっては上映禁止となったようです。詳しくは覚えていませんので新鮮な気持ちで読み返してみようかと思います。

In Japan, the word “conclave” may have become widely known around the time of the 2005 election following the death of Pope John Paul II, as its sound overlaps with the Japanese word for “root contest.

It is said that the term “conclave” was first used in the papal election of 1268. It is said to be derived from Latin, where “cum” means “with ~” and “clavis” means “key,” which translates to “with the key.

The election was held in Bidelbo, Italy, in 1268, but the Italian and French factions were divided and could not reach an agreement, and the position remained vacant for three years. The people of Bidervo were so frustrated that they locked the cardinals in their palace, locked the door, and gave them only bread and water. It is said that rules for the election of the Pope were subsequently established to avoid prolonging the election.

 

Now they are to continue until one of the candidates receives at least two-thirds of the votes of the participating cardinals, and black smoke was raised yesterday when the first round of elections failed to produce an elected pope. If a new pope is elected, white smoke will rise and the sound of bells will echo.

The cardinals who will vote this time come from 70 countries, up about 20 from the last time, and it is said to be the “most international conclave in history.

 

It is said to be “the most international conclave in history…until it is decided,” which, in layman’s terms, seems rather strange. If everyone changed their votes every time, I don’t think it would be decided in a few days.

 

The movie “Papal Election,” which was nominated for eight Academy Awards last year, has been screened in many places and has become a topic of conversation. It seems that this election ritual, which has continued for a long time, is attracting people beyond the boundaries of religion. It is said that the film perfectly reproduces the pattern of the conclave, and I wonder if watching the film will clear up many questions.

 

Personally, when I hear about the Papal election, I first think of the book “Angels and Demons” by Dan Brown, which was also made into a movie. I remember reading it in one sitting because it was so interesting. The movie starring Tom Hanks was also very powerful.

The movie achieved record box-office revenues, but it seems to have been banned in some countries for religious reasons. I don’t remember the details, so I will try to read it again with a fresh mind.
