本日はすっきりと晴れ渡り、気持ちの良い日となっております。しかし最近は急に天候が変わることも多く、雷や雹（ひょう）、竜巻など予報が追い付かないこともあるようです。みなさまくれぐれもご注意ください。

 

さて先日から気になっておりました、こちらの菩薩様。「普賢菩薩（ふげんぼさつ）」と呼ばれ、辰年と巳年生まれの人の守護本尊でもあるようです。ふっくらとしたお顔立ちで優しい雰囲気が漂っております。釈迦如来を中心とし、その両脇に脇士（脇侍）として「文殊菩薩」と「普賢菩薩」が配置されることが多く、「釈迦三尊像」と呼ばれています。

 

 

 

 

文殊菩薩は「智慧」の象徴として聞き馴染みのある方も多いかもしれませんが、「三人寄れば文殊の知恵」という有名なことわざにもあるように、「文殊ほどの知恵は持たずとも、三人寄れば良い知恵も浮かぶだろう」と言われるほどの知恵の持ち主です。獅子（ライオン）に乗り、宝剣を持ち、若々しい少年の姿で表されることが多いとか。

 

一方「普賢菩薩」は釈迦如来の慈悲の教えを実際に行う「行（実践）」を象徴していると言われています。六牙（ろくが）の白い象に乗り、手には蓮華を持つ姿で表されることが多いとか。象は純粋さ、力強さ、高貴さを象徴し、六牙は一説には仏様の境涯に到るための六つの修業である「六波羅蜜」の布施・持戒・忍辱・精進・禅定・智慧を表しているとも言われています。風光舎の象にも立派な六牙が生えております。

智慧と実践する力、どちらも欠かせないということでしょうか。

 

普賢菩薩は平安時代後期に法華経信仰が高まるにつれ、よく描かれるようになり、「女性も浄土に行ける」と説いたことから女性からの信仰を集めたとか。釈迦如来とは違い、様々な宝飾品で着飾っていらっしゃいます。

 

そもそも「菩薩」とは、「菩提薩埵(ぼだいさった）」の略で、菩提とは仏のさとり、薩埵とは求める人を意味し、仏の悟りに向かって努力している人を表すといいます。

仏のさとりには低いものから高いものまで位が５２あるとされ、菩薩の中でも最も暗いが高いと菩薩とされる「弥勒菩薩」でさえも、さとりを開くまでまだ５６億７０００万年かかるのだそうです。気の遠くなる時間の長さです。地球が生まれたのが４６億年前ですので、まさに天文学的数字といえます。

そもそも仏の世界を人間の感覚で計ろうとすること自体が間違いなのかもしれませんね。浅はかでございました。

I have been wondering about this Bodhisattva since the other day. It is called “Fugen Bosatsu” and seems to be the guardian deity of people born in the year of the dragon and the year of the snake. His plump face gives off a gentle atmosphere. The Shakyamuni Buddha is often flanked on both sides by Monju Bosatsu (Manjusri Bosatsu) and Fugen Bosatsu (Fugen Bosatsu), and is called the “Shakyamuni Sanzon Zo” (three images of Buddha).

 

Many people may be familiar with Monju Bosatsu as a symbol of “wisdom.” As the famous saying goes, “When three people gather, Monju has wisdom,” Monju Bosatsu is so wise that it is said, “Even though he does not possess wisdom as great as Monju, if three people gather, good wisdom will also come to mind. He is often represented as a young boy riding a lion and holding a treasured sword.

 

Fugen Bosatsu, on the other hand, is said to symbolize the “action (practice)” of actually carrying out the compassionate teachings of Sakyamuni Buddha. He is often depicted riding a white elephant with six tusks and holding a lotus flower in his hand. The elephant symbolizes purity, strength, and nobility, and the six tusks are said to represent the “six paramitas,” or six practices to attain Buddhahood: fuse, jichiji, shinshin, shinjin, zenjo, and wisdom. The elephant at Fumikosha also has six magnificent tusks.

Wisdom and the power to practice, both of which are indispensable, are also represented by the six tusks on the elephant.

 

Fugen Bosatsu was often depicted in the late Heian period (794-1185) as faith in the Lotus Sutra increased, and he attracted the faith of women because he taught that “women can also go to the Pure Land. Unlike the Shakyamuni Buddha, the Bodhisattva is adorned with various jewelry.

 

Bodhisattva“ is an abbreviation of ”Bodai-sattva,“ which means ”Buddha’s Satori,“ and ‘sattva’ means ”seeker,” and is said to represent a person who is striving toward Buddha’s enlightenment.

It is said that there are 52 levels of Buddhist enlightenment, from the lowest to the highest, and that even Maitreya Bodhisattva, the darkest of all Bodhisattvas, still needs 5.67 billion years to attain enlightenment. It is a mind-boggling length of time. The earth was born 4.6 billion years ago, so it is truly an astronomical figure.

It may be a mistake to try to measure the world of the Buddha with human senses, but…. I am a shallow person.
