本日の名古屋はまた強い日差しが戻っております。

水害や交通の乱れなど大きな被害をもたらした台風１０号でしたが、昨日、目を疑うようなニュースが流れてきました。屋久島の樹齢約３０００年といわれる弥生杉が倒れたというものでした。幹回りが８メートルの巨木でした。

屋久島はいつか訪れたいと思っていた憧れの場所で、山奥深くの「縄文杉」までは体力的に厳しいけれども「弥生杉」なら拝むことができるのではと期待しておりました。折れた姿は無残にも見えますが、なぜか「長い間お疲れ様でした。」という気持ちになりました。

 

一般的に杉の寿命は約５００年とされていますが、屋久島には樹齢２０００年を超える杉も少なくありません。なぜ屋久島の杉が巨木となり長生きするのか、私ずっと誤解しておりました。他の土地よりも栄養が豊富で環境が良いからだと思っていたのです。

実際には屋久島は雨が多く水には恵まれているものの、栄養分の乏しい花崗岩の地盤で生育しているそうです。そのため成長には時間がかかり年輪の間隔が狭くなり、材質が強度が増しているとか。また樹脂分が多く腐りにくいという特徴があるそうです。

厳しい環境の中で地道に確実に成長をし続けることで、あんなにも威風堂々とした姿になり、私たちを魅了するのですね。本当にお疲れ様でした。

 

 

 

 

木について検索していると、世界の様々な珍しい巨木に出くわしました。有名なバオバブの木や、強風が吹く地域で幹がねじれながら成長する木など。その中でも異彩を放っていたのは「レインボーユーカリ」という木でした。写真を見た時には幹に絵具を掛けたのかと思いました。

レインボーユーカリは家庭でも育てることのできる植物だそうですが、成長し大きくなると樹皮がめくれ、その下から様々な色の幹が露出してくるそうです。きれい？と言えば綺麗なのですが固定観念が邪魔をして違和感も感じてしまいます。

屋久杉と違い成長速度が。速く２，３年ほどで３メートルほどになるそうです。そのカラフルな木肌は幹がドラム缶ほどの太さにならないと見られないとも言われておりますが、この成長の早さからパルプ材として重宝されているとのこと。

色づく仕組みは紅葉とおなじで、多くの植物に含まれる色素成分が関係しているようです。黄色く変化するクロロフィル、赤く変化するアントシアニン。またクロロフイルとアントシアニンが混ざって紫にも変化します。

レインボーユーカリは葉だけでなく幹でも光合成を行うために、通常葉に存在する色素成分が樹皮にも含まれます。そのため樹皮が剝がれると栄養の供給が途絶え、色素の分解がはじまるとか。

剥けたばかりの樹皮は緑色をしており、時間と共に緑、紫、赤、茶色の順に変化していきます。

ネットで見るような鮮やかな虹色になるのは中々難しいようですが、自然の底知れぬ力を感じずにはいられません。ご興味のある方はぜひチェックしてみてください。

Today in Nagoya, the strong sunshine is back again.

Typhoon No. 10, which caused flooding, traffic disruption, and other major damage, was followed yesterday by an eye-opening news story. A Yayoi cedar tree, said to be about 3,000 years old, fell on the island of Yakushima. It was a huge tree with a trunk circumference of 8 meters.

Yakushima is a place I have longed to visit someday, and although it would be physically difficult for me to reach the “Jomon Cedars” deep in the mountains, I had hoped that I would be able to see the “Yayoi Cedars”. The broken cedars looked cruel, but for some reason, I felt a sense of “thank you for your hard work over the long years. I felt “Thank you for your hard work for a long time”.

 

Generally, the life span of a cedar tree is about 500 years, but there are many cedars in Yakushima that are over 2,000 years old. I have always misunderstood why the cedars of Yakushima grow into giant trees and live so long. I thought it was because the island has a better environment with more nutrients than other places.

In reality, Yakushima Island is blessed with abundant rainfall and water, but it grows on granite ground that is poor in nutrients. This is why it takes longer to grow, and the spacing between the annual rings is narrower, which makes the material stronger. It also has a high resin content, which makes it resistant to decay.

The trees grow steadily and surely in a harsh environment, and this is what makes them so majestic and fascinating to us. Thank you very much for your hard work.

 

In my search for trees, I came across various unusual giant trees from around the world. The famous baobab tree, trees that grow with twisting trunks in areas where strong winds blow, and so on. One of the most unusual trees was the “Rainbow Eucalyptus” tree. When I saw the photo, I thought the trunk had been covered with paint.

The rainbow eucalyptus is a plant that can be grown at home, and as it grows, the bark peels back to expose the various colors of the trunk from underneath. Is it beautiful? It is beautiful, but I feel uncomfortable because of stereotypes.

Unlike the Yakusugi cedar, the growth speed is very fast. Unlike Yakusugi cedar, it grows quickly, reaching a height of about 3 meters in a few years. It is said that its colorful bark can only be seen when the trunk is as thick as a drum, and because of this rapid growth, it is valued as a pulp material.

The coloring mechanism is the same as that of autumn leaves, and seems to be related to pigment components contained in many plants. Chlorophyll turns yellow and anthocyanin turns red. Chlorophyll and anthocyanins also change to purple when mixed together.

Rainbow eucalypts photosynthesize not only in their leaves but also in their trunks, so the pigment components that are normally present in the leaves are also present in the bark. Therefore, when the bark is peeled, the supply of nutrients is cut off and the pigment begins to break down.

The freshly peeled bark is green in color and changes over time to green, purple, red, and brown, in that order.

It seems to be quite difficult to achieve the vivid rainbow colors seen on the Internet, but one cannot help but feel the unfathomable power of nature. If you are interested, please check it out.
