昨日のブログにもありましたが、週明けから各地で梅雨入りの発表がされるようです。本日のような爽やかな天気もあと数日かと思うと、大物の洗濯など焦ってしまいますが、昨今の米問題を考えると、この時期の雨は美味しいお米を育ててくれる恵みの雨ともいえます。

 

 

 

日本は比較的降水量が多く、定期的に雨が降るのが当たり前だと思いがちですが、世界には一滴の雨を待ちわびる地域もあるといいます。

特に砂漠地帯は気温が４０℃を超え、年間の降水量が２５０ｍｍにも満たないところもあり、人間が生活するには過酷な環境ですが、時折現れる泉の周りに住居を構えオアシスを作り暮らす人々もいます。雨がほとんど降らないのにどうして泉ができるのか不思議だったのですが、アフリカ大陸などは地下に巨大な地下水が存在するのですね。数万年にわたって少しずつ降った雨が地中に浸透し、深さが５０メートルを超える帯水層もあるといいます。高度が高い地域から低い地域に流れた地下水が湧き出て泉をつくるのだとか。あの乾燥した大地の下に水が溢れているなんて不思議な気もします。

 

砂漠は人間にとってだけでなく、他の生物にとっても過酷な環境ですが、その中でも独自の生態系が存在し、なんとも不思議な生物が暮らしておりました。調べているうちにハマってしまいましたので、よければお付き合いを。

 

「奇想天外」という名前を持つ数千年生きるとされる植物は２枚の葉を生涯にわたって地を這うように伸ばし続け、その姿が妖怪のようでもあり（失礼）、名付けた人の気持ちも分かる気がします。

 

以前動物番組で紹介された「スキハナカナヘビ」は「あっちっちダンス」と呼ばれるユーモラスな動きが話題となりました。必死に生きているのにユーモラスとは失礼かもしれませんが、地面の熱さをしのぐために左前脚と右後ろ脚、右前脚と左後ろ脚を交互に持ちあげます。それでも我慢できない時はお腹を地面につけて両手両足を飛行機のように広げるという、まるで人間の赤ちゃんのような姿が愛らしいと人気者になりました。

 

モロクトカゲは体長１５ｃｍほどの小さなトカゲですが、全身が鋭いトゲで覆われており捕食者から身を守っています。さらに全身の皮膚には細い溝が走っており、なんとそれらすべてが口へと繋がっていて、わずかな雨や霧で体についた水滴が口元へと水が集まるようになっているのだそうです。環境に対応した進化がすざましいです。

 

昆虫の中にも驚きのアリが存在しておりました。サハラギンアリは「最も暑さに強い動物」と呼ばれ、気温が７０℃に達する日中でも行動できるそうです。銀色の被毛を持ち、太陽光を反射し体を熱から守っているのだとか。さすがに短時間で摂餌を済ませないと体温が高くなりすぎるため、毎秒８５５ｍｍ（時速３.１ｋｍ）で高速移動するのだそうです。これは体長の１０８倍の距離を１秒間に移動することになり、人間にすると毎秒２００ｍの速さになるというから驚きです。

 

また南アフリカに位置するナミブ砂漠にあるナマクワ国立公園は年間降水量がわずか２５ｍｍだそうですが、８月の数日だけ極彩色の花園になる場所があり、８キロ四方に４０００種の花が咲き誇るそうです。７月ころに一瞬降る雨が地中にある球根に届き、８，９月に満開になるのだとか。その集中した雨が毎年どこに降るか分からないため、花園もどこに出現するか分からず、写真に収めたい人は何週間も探しまわるそうです。

 

アフリカ大陸にはまだ足を踏み入れたことがありません。自然の神秘と生命力に満ち溢れている大地を一度は踏みしめてみたいものです。

As mentioned in yesterday’s blog, it seems that the rainy season will begin at the end of the week in many areas. However, considering the recent rice problem, the rain during this season can be considered a blessing that helps to grow delicious rice.

Japan has relatively abundant precipitation, and we tend to take it for granted that it rains regularly, but there are regions of the world that long for even a drop of rain.

Deserts in particular are harsh environments for human life, with temperatures exceeding 40°C and annual precipitation of less than 250 mm in some places, but there are people who live in oases built around the occasional spring that appears. I had wondered how springs could be formed when there is almost no rainfall, but it turns out that on the African continent, there is a huge underground reservoir. The rain that has fallen little by little over tens of thousands of years has percolated into the ground, and some aquifers are more than 50 meters deep. The groundwater that flows from high altitude areas to low altitude areas gushes out and creates springs. It is strange to think that under that arid land, there is an abundance of water.

 

Deserts are a harsh environment not only for humans but also for other living creatures. I got hooked as I was researching it, so please bear with me if you would like to know more.

 

The plant, which is said to live for thousands of years, has a name of “kisotenkai,” meaning “strange,” and the way its two leaves crawl on the ground throughout its life is almost yokai-like (pardon the pun), and one can sense the surprise of the person who gave it its name.

 

The “Sukihana canada snake” was once introduced on an animal program, and its humorous movements, called the “ah-chi-chi dance,” became the talk of the town. It may be rude to call it humorous when it is desperately trying to stay alive, but it alternately lifts its left front leg and right hind leg, or right front leg and left hind leg, to escape the heat on the ground. When it still cannot stand the heat, it puts its belly on the ground and spreads its arms and legs like an airplane, looking like a human baby, which has made it popular for its adorable appearance.

 

Although they are small lizards (about 15 cm in length), they are covered with sharp spines all over their bodies to protect themselves from predators. In addition, their skin is covered with narrow grooves, all of which lead to their mouths, where water droplets from the slightest rain or mist collect in their mouths. It is amazing how they have evolved in response to their environment.

 

Among insects, there were also some surprising ants. The Saharagin ant is called “the most heat-tolerant animal,” and is able to operate even during the daytime when temperatures reach 70°C. It has a silvery coat, and is able to move in the sunlight. They have a silvery coat that reflects sunlight and protects their bodies from heat. They need to feed for a short time to keep their body temperature high, so they move at a high speed of 855 mm per second (3.1 km per hour). This means that they travel a distance 108 times the length of their body in one second, which is an astonishing 200 meters per second in human terms.

 

The Namakwa National Park in the Namib Desert in South Africa has only 25mm of rainfall per year, but for a few days in August, there is a place that becomes an extremely colorful flower garden, where 4,000 species of flowers bloom in an area of 8 km square. The flowers bloom in August and September. Since they do not know where that concentrated rain will fall each year, they do not know where the flower gardens will appear either. People who want to photograph them search for weeks.

 

I have yet to set foot on the African continent. I would like to step on the land filled with the mystery and life force of nature at least once.
