昨年行きそびれた梅園を今春は見頃に訪れることができました。花粉症予防のマスク越しにも香りが飛び込んできて、慌ててマスクを外すと甘い香りに全身が包まれました。まさに春の訪れを感じる香りでございます。

梅の花の鑑賞も楽しみなのですが、私はどちらかというと香りを嗅ぎに来ているのかもしれません。

今年は枝がかなり剪定された印象でしたが、見事な梅の園が広がっておりました。

 

 

 

 

立派な望遠レンズカメラで撮影されている方も多く、どのような景色が見えるのですか？と尋ねたくなりましたが、その勇気はありませんでした。きっと花の間に見え隠れするうぐいすも美しく写っているのでしょうね。

 

さて風光舎ブログでもよく話題にのぼる大河ドラマ「べらぼう」、魅力的な役者さんが揃っていて毎回楽しみにしておりますが、その中でも個人的に目を引かれるのは平賀源内役の安田顕（やすだけん）さん。先週は久々にご登場され、つい身を乗り出して観てしまいました。役者さんですので当たり前なのですが、作品ごとに全く違う印象を醸し出し驚かされます。

 

安田さん演じる平賀源内もいくつもの顔を持っていたことで知られています。教科書にも登場し、天才発明家という知識があるので、ドラマを観ていても凄い人だと認識できますが、もし予備知識がなければ一体何者？という雰囲気が安田さんの演技からもにじみ出ております。

平賀源内は現代の言葉で「マルチクリエイター」や「スーパーインフルエンサー」などの横文字でもしっくりくる稀有な人物だとされています。

教科書で目にしたことのある「エレキテル」、当時はよく理解していませんでしたが、オランダから持ち込まれた医療器具だったそうで、壊れていたものを平賀源内が修復したのだそうです。静電気による火花を発生させ、見世物として当時の人々を驚かせたのだとか。えっそれだけ？と正直思いましたが、その当時、意図的に火花を発生させ、それを目の前で見ることができるのは画期的なことだったのでしょう。平賀源内は人々を驚かせる天才だったともいわれています。

 

発明家、蘭学者、本草学者、俳人などの肩書の他に、ペンネーム「天竺浪人」で戯作家としてベストセラーとなる娯楽小説を出版したり、日本初の油絵を描いたり、独特のキャッチコピーで歯磨き粉の売上向上に貢献したりと源内の功績を数え上げればきりがないようです。現在でも受け継がれている「土用の丑の日」も源内の発案との説もあります。

肩書という言葉を嘲笑するように、どんな垣根も軽く飛び越えてしまう頭脳？感覚？性格？、それこそ一言では表せない、人を引き付ける超強力な磁石が埋め込まれていた人物だったのでしょう。

 

平賀源内は香川県の出身で、　高松藩の下級武士の家に生まれました。幼少時代から植物や動物の観察に興味を持ち本草学者としても名を馳せました。高松藩を脱藩し浪人となり江戸に出てからは、国内の資源の発掘と称して、全国から所蔵品を募り、１３００もの物品が集まる博覧会を企画しました。その博覧会に出品された各地の珍しい物産が図録としてまとめられ「物類品隲(ぶつるいひんしつ）」として刊行されました。

その中の一つとしてサトウキビ栽培と砂糖の製造法も書かれており、現在香川県や徳島県の特産とされる「和三盆」に受け継がれているとのこと。砂糖の製法書の多くが写本としてしか伝わらなかったのに対し、「物類品隲」に収録された「甘庶培養並二製造ノ法」は何度も版を変えて出版され、しかも平易な文章で書かれたため広く読まれることとなり砂糖の製造産業に貢献しました。博覧会を企画するだけでなく図録を出版するという発想の豊かさが平賀源内たる所以なのかもしれません。

私、和三盆の干菓子が大好物でして疲れた時などにエネルギーをいただいています。こんなところにも源内さんが顔を覗かせているとは…。

 

 

 

現代に平賀源内が生きていたらどんな面白いことを見せてくれただろうかとついつい思いを馳せてしまいます。

Heiga Gennai, played by Yasuda-san, is known to have had many faces. He is known as a genius inventor who appears in textbooks, so we can recognize him as a great person when we watch his dramas, but if we had no prior knowledge of him, we would wonder who he was. If I had no prior knowledge of who he was, I would have been surprised to know who he was.

Hiraga Gennai is considered to be a rare person who fits well with modern terms such as “multi-creator” or “super-influencer.

The “elektron,” which I had seen in textbooks and did not fully understand at the time, was a medical device brought from Holland, and Gennai Hiraga restored it after it had been broken. It is said that the device produced sparks due to static electricity and astonished people of the time as a spectacle. I honestly thought, “That’s all there is to it? I honestly thought, “That’s all there is to it?” But at that time, it must have been revolutionary to intentionally generate sparks and to be able to see them right in front of your eyes. It is said that Hiraga Gennai was a genius who surprised people.

 

In addition to his titles as an inventor, Dutch scholar, herbalist, and haiku poet, Gennai published best-selling entertainment novels as a playwright under the pen name “Jersey Rambler,” created Japan’s first oil paintings, and helped increase sales of toothpaste with his unique catchphrase, to name just a few of his achievements. There is even a theory that Gennai originated the “Doyo no Ushi” (day of the ox in the summer), which is still passed down to this day.

He is a man with a mind that can easily transcend any barriers, as if to ridicule the word “title”. Sense? A personality? He must have been a person embedded with an extremely powerful magnet that attracted people, which cannot be expressed in a single word.

 

Hiraga Gennai was born in Kagawa Prefecture to a low-ranking samurai of the Takamatsu clan. From his childhood, he was interested in observing plants and animals, and became famous as a herbalist. After escaping from the Takamatsu clan and becoming a ronin, he went to Edo (now Tokyo), where he organized an exposition of 1,300 items from his collection from all over the country, calling for the discovery of domestic resources. Rare products from around the country that were exhibited at the exposition were compiled into a catalog and published as “Bussui Hinshitsu” (a book of goods and commodities).

 

One of them describes sugarcane cultivation and sugar manufacturing methods, which have been passed down to “wasanbon,” a specialty of Kagawa and Tokushima prefectures today. While most books on sugar production methods were only available in manuscript form, the “Ganjo Shokubutsu Hou (Methods of Cultivating and Manufacturing Sugar)” included in the “Mono Ruibin Ki” was published in several different editions and written in plain text, making it widely read and contributing to the sugar manufacturing industry. Perhaps the reason for Hiraga Gennai’s richness of ideas is that he not only planned expositions but also published catalogues of them.

I am a big fan of Japanese sweets made of wasanbon, and when I am tired, I get a boost of energy from them. I never thought that Gennai could be seen in such a place….

I can’t help but wonder what kind of interesting things Hiraga Gennai would have shown us if he were alive today.
