今朝は久しぶりに青空が見える良い天気でした。そういえば以前、季節が一年中夏なのと冬なのと、どちらが良いかという話になったことがありますが、皆さまならどちらを選ばれますか？

太陽が照りつける40度近い気温が一年中か、どんより曇り空の続く寒い一年中か。実際にはあり得ないし、答えとしては「どっちもイヤ」なんですけど（笑）

最近の暑すぎる夏にほとほと嫌気がさしていたので、冬に気持ちは傾きかけていたのですが、ここ数日雨が続き、「やっぱり夏か」と、今日の青空を見て思い直したところです。

 

 

「あなたの一番好きな色は？」というアンケートでいつも上位にあがる青色は、色彩学で「神経を落ち着かせる色」でもあります。たしかに青空を見上げるだけで、なんだか気持ちが晴れやかになる気がします。

なるほど、私たちを取り巻くものには、見上げた青い空をはじめ、かなり「青」が存在しますね。

他には青い海、青い地球でしょうか。こうなると、「青が好き」は、もう私たちの生まれる前からくみこまれたDNAの中に存在するのではないかとも思えてなりません。

 

 

現在のように化学変化で新しい色を調合することのできなかった時代、青色は高貴な色とされてきました。自然界から美しい青色を持つものを見つけることは、簡単ではなかったからです。

中でも飛び抜けて鮮やかで高貴なのは、ラピスラズリの青です。

中世ヨーロッパで何より珍重されたのは、そのラピスラズリの青「ウルトラマリン」。その色名ウルトラ（超える）マリン（海）名はアフガニスタンでしかラピスラズリが産出しなかったため、はるばる海路で運ばれたことからつけられたといいます。

 

ラピスラズリの鮮やかな色彩は他の鉱物や天然顔料では再現することが難しく、ラピスラズリの青色を作品に使うことができるのは、権力の象徴でもありました。
特に古代エジプトや中世以降のヨーロッパ世界ではその希少さと美しさから、ラピスラズリは高貴な色として大切にされてきました。

ラピスラズリは非常に希少で高価な石であったので、その使い先も慎重に選ばれました。
青い部分はなんでもかんでもラピスラズリというわけではなく、その価値にふさわしい人にこの色を使おうという風潮があったようです。

その最大の例が、聖母マリアです。

中世以降のヨーロッパでは、聖母のまとうマントにラピスラズリを使う伝統がありました。

 

そんな中、革新的な挑戦をしたのがフェルメールでした。別名、フェルメールブルーと呼ばれる鮮やかな青は皆さまご存じのことと思います。
フェルメールは、イエスや聖母マリアなどのキリスト教の重要な人物や、王族や貴族などの権力者以外の人物に対し、大量のラピスラズリを使用したことで知られています。

これは彼が、資産家でありラピスラズリの調達ができるだけの財力がある家庭の出身であったからと言われています。その後、家族は借金まみれになったとも言われていますが…。

 

このラピスラズリから青を抽出する方法、調べてみると気が遠くなりそうなほど大変そうでした。まさにその様子は錬金術さながら。ご興味のある方はぜひ調べてみてください。

まさに青は一日にしてならず。そう知って絵を眺めると、その青の向こうにはまた別の世界が広がる気がします。

It was a beautiful day this morning with blue skies for the first time in a while. I remember we once had a discussion about which season is better, summer or winter.

Would you rather have the sun shining and temperatures near 40 degrees Celsius all year round, or a cold, overcast sky all year round? In reality, it is impossible, and the answer is “I don’t like either one” (laughs).

I have been so fed up with the too-hot summer recently that I was leaning toward winter, but the rain has continued for the past few days, and today’s blue sky has made me think, “It’s summer after all.

 

But after a few days of rain, the blue sky today reminded me that summer is here after all. Blue is also known as “the color that calms the nerves,” according to color science. It is true that just looking up at the blue sky makes us feel refreshed.

I see, there is quite a bit of “blue” in the things that surround us, including the blue sky we look up at.

Other examples would be the blue ocean and the blue earth. This makes me think that the “love of blue” may already exist in our DNA, which has been incorporated into our DNA since before we were born.

 

In the days when it was not possible to mix new colors through chemical changes, as is the case today, blue was regarded as a noble color. It was not easy to find beautiful blue in nature.

One of the most brilliant and noble colors is the blue of lapis lazuli.

The most prized color in medieval Europe was ultramarine, the blue of the lapis lazuli. The color name “ultramarine” was derived from the fact that lapis lazuli was produced only in Afghanistan and was transported by sea all the way to Afghanistan.

 

The vivid color of lapis lazuli is difficult to reproduce with other minerals or natural pigments, and the ability to use the blue color of lapis lazuli in one’s work was a symbol of power.
Especially in ancient Egypt and the post-medieval European world, lapis lazuli was cherished as a noble color because of its rarity and beauty.

Because lapis lazuli was a very rare and expensive stone, its use was carefully chosen.
The blue part of the stone was not always used for lapis lazuli, and there was a tendency to use this color for people who were worthy of its value.

The greatest example is the Virgin Mary.

In Europe since the Middle Ages, there was a tradition of using lapis lazuli for the Virgin’s cloak.

 

Vermeer took an innovative challenge. The vivid blue color, also known as Vermeer blue, is well-known to everyone.
Vermeer is known for his use of large quantities of lapis lazuli on important Christian figures such as Jesus and the Virgin Mary, as well as on less powerful figures such as royalty and nobility.

This is said to be because he came from a family that was wealthy and had the resources to procure lapis lazuli. It is also said that his family later fell into debt…

 

The method of extracting the blue color from lapis lazuli seemed to be so difficult that it was almost mind-boggling when I looked into it. It is just like alchemy. If you are interested, please check it out.

Blue is not created in a day. When you look at the painting with this knowledge, you feel that another world opens up beyond the blue.
