このところ、外を歩いておりますと椿の花が目に入ってきます。

椿は、ツバキ科ツバキ属の常緑高木で、光沢のある濃い緑の葉を持つという特徴があります。

そんな椿、実は日本原産の植物です。

「つばき」の名前は、厚みのある葉の意味で「厚葉木（あつばき）」、つややかな葉の「艶葉木（つやばき）」、光沢のある葉の「光沢木（つやき）」が訛ったなどと言われています。

 

冬から春にかけて咲き、冬の雪景色にも映える美しい椿。日本では、多くの人に親しまれている花です。花の赤と葉の緑のコントラストが美しいですよね。

気付けば、いつの間にか咲いていつの間にか咲き終わっている、そんな街の風景に溶け込んでいる椿ですが、花びらが一枚一枚散らずに、丸ごと花が地面に散っているのに気づきます。なぜ椿の花は丸ごと落ちるのでしょうか？

 

調べたところ、椿は、「花びら一枚一枚」と「雄しべ」が全てつながっている構造なので花のまま落ちるのだそうです。

椿が「首が落ちるように散るから不吉」と言われることがよくあることは皆さまご存じとは思いますが、そこには椿ならではの、自然界を生きるための術がありました。

椿は、鳥が蜜を吸いに来ることにより受粉をするのですが、花びらの隙間から蜜を吸われると交配ができなくなります。

そこで、椿は花びらをつなげて鳥が正面からしか蜜を吸えないようにして子孫繁栄につないだのです。昆虫ではなく、鳥たちに花粉を運んでもらうため、鳥の飛来を受け入れるために、花の作りを強くしたというわけです。

それで花びらが散るのではなく、花が落ちるわけです。

また、椿の花は香りません。なぜなら、昆虫をおびき寄せるためには香りが必要ですが、鳥は視覚で花に飛んでくるからです。だからこそ、わびしい冬の景色の中、たくさんの花を咲かせるんですね。

そんな椿の花の戦略を知ると、また違った目で見ることができそうです。

 

椿といえば赤色のイメージですが、白やピンク色などそれぞれの花言葉があります。椿全般の花言葉は、「控えめな素晴らしさ」、「控えめな優しさ」、「気取らない優美さ」、「誇り」です。「控えめ」というキーワードが多いのは、椿が華やかで存在感のある花を咲かせるのに対し、香りがほとんどないことからだそうです。

 

また、椿の花言葉にはちょっと怖い裏花言葉もあるといいます。

椿の裏花言葉は『罪を犯す女』。これが、怖い花言葉があると言われてしまう理由のようです。

由来となったのは、オペラでおなじみの「椿姫」。フランス小説「椿姫」に登場する美しい娼婦マルグリットと、青年アルマンの恋物語が由来です。

愛し合う二人なのに娼婦だったという過去によって、別れを選ぶしかなかったマルグリットは、さみしい思いを抱えながらも覚悟を決めて、アルマンの元を離れ娼婦に戻ります。以前から患っていた肺の病により彼女がひっそりとこの世を去ったとき、アルマンはマルグリットが離れた理由を知るといった物語です。

『罪を犯す女』、それだけ見ると怖い意味ですが、マルグリットという女性の純愛と悲恋を描いた作品からつけられたと考えると、その花言葉のイメージも変わりますね。

 

ぽとりと落ちる理由や、花言葉など思い出しながら見ると、美しく咲く椿も落ちた椿もまた違った印象に見えてきます。

Recently, I have been seeing camellia flowers when I walk outside.

Camellia is a tall evergreen tree belonging to the family of camellias with glossy dark green leaves.

Such camellias are actually native to Japan.

The name “camellia” is said to be derived from “atsubaki,” meaning thick leaves, “yatsuyabaki,” meaning glossy leaves, and “yatsuyaki,” meaning glossy leaves.

 

The beautiful camellia blooms from winter to spring and looks beautiful against the snowy winter landscape. In Japan, it is a popular flower among many people. The contrast between the red of the flower and the green of the leaves is beautiful.

Camellias blend into the cityscape, blooming before you know it and finishing blooming before you know it, but you notice that the petals do not fall off one by one, but the whole flower is scattered on the ground. Why do camellia flowers fall whole?

 

According to my research, the camellia has a structure in which “each petal” and “stamen” are all connected, which is why the flower falls off as it is.

As you may know, camellias are often said to be unlucky because they fall as if their heads were falling off, but there was a technique unique to camellias that allowed them to survive in the natural world.

Camellias are pollinated by birds that come to suck nectar from the petals, but if birds suck nectar from the crevices of the petals, they cannot cross-pollinate.

Therefore, the camellia’s petals are connected so that birds can only feed on the nectar from the front, which leads to the proliferation of offspring. In order for birds, rather than insects, to carry pollen, the camellia’s flower structure was strengthened to accommodate the arrival of birds.

This is why the petals do not fall off.

Also, camellia flowers are not fragrant. This is because, while fragrance is necessary to lure insects, birds fly to flowers by sight. That is why camellias produce so many flowers in the dreary winter landscape.

If you know the strategy of camellia flowers, you will be able to see them with different eyes.

 

Camellias are often associated with the image of red, but each color, such as white and pink, has its own language of flowers. The language of flowers for camellias in general is “modest splendor,” “modest kindness,” “unpretentious grace,” and “pride. The reason why the key word “modest” is often used is because camellias have gorgeous flowers with a strong presence, whereas they have almost no fragrance.

 

Also, the language of camellia flowers has a rather frightening secret language.

The camellia’s back-flower language is ‘a woman who commits a sin. This seems to be the reason why it is said to have a scary flower language.

The origin of this flower is the well-known opera “La Traviata. It comes from the love story of Marguerite, a beautiful prostitute, and Armand, a young man, in the French novel “La Traviata.

Marguerite and Armand love each other, but due to their past history as prostitutes, they have no choice but to part ways. When she quietly passes away from a lung disease she had been suffering from for some time, Armand learns the reason for Marguerite’s departure.

The meaning of the flower’s name, “The Woman Who Commits Sin,” may seem scary at first glance, but when you consider that it was named after a work that depicts the pure love and tragic love of a woman named Marguerite, the image of the flower’s language changes.
