５月５日から５月２０日までは二十四節気の立夏にあたります。更に七十二候では５月５日から５月９日は蛙始鳴（かわずはじめてなく）、５月１０日から５月１４日は蚯蚓出（みみずいずる）、そして今の時期５月１５日から５月１９日は竹笋出（たけのこしょうず）となっており、とにかく冬の間に眠っていたありとあらゆる生き物が出現する季節ということでしょうか。ぼーっと歩いておりましても色鮮やかに咲く草花や元気に動き回る昆虫などに目を奪われます。

 

本日出くわしましたのは、黒いアゲハ蝶です。ジャコウアゲハでしょうか？（蝶の苦手な方ごめんなさい…）漆黒の羽が光に透け妖艶な姿がなんとも格好良く、思わずスマホを取り出しました。きっとまたカメラを向けた途端に逃げられてしまうのだろうと思っていましたら、待ったく動ぜず。撮りたければどうぞ、と言わんばかりのご様子でした。

 

 

 

 

蝶は一般的には年に数回発生するそうで、アゲハチョウの場合は、越冬した蛹が４月から５月に羽化する春型と、春型から生まれた卵が６月から８月頃に羽化する夏型などがあるそうです。私が出会ったアゲハチョウは越冬して羽化したばかりだったのでしょうか。確かにまだ怖々と周りの様子を伺っているようにも見えました。何となくですが。

 

驚くことに最近の研究では蝶が誕生したのは１億年前とも２億年前とも言われています。２億１千万年前のチョウや蛾の鱗粉（りんぷん）が発見されたとの報告もあるそうです。そうなると花を咲かせる開花植物が登場するよりずっと前にチョウや蛾は生まれていたことになります。そうなるとチョウはストローのような口吻で何をエサにしていたのかなど、まだまだ謎多き生き物のようです。鱗粉がないとチョウは飛べないと聞いたことがありますが、鱗粉により体温調整や耐水、雌雄識別の匂いのコントロールなどの重要な役割を果たしているといいます。チョウが苦手な人の中には鱗粉が苦手という人も多いと思いますが、チョウにとっては無くてはならないもののようです。

諸説ありますが、遅くとも６６００万年前には現在確認されているほぼ全ての蝶の種類が出現していたのだとか。なので恐竜の周りを既に蝶は飛んでいたということになります。ちょっと微笑ましい光景でもあります。

 

子供の頃、「これってチョウ？それとも蛾？」とよく質問していたものです。見た目は美しいのに「蛾」となると何となく避けたくなるという、蛾にとっては理不尽極まりない態度をとっておりました。どちらもチョウ目というグループに属する仲間です。チョウ目は１２６科で約１８０００種が存在し、昆虫のなかでも著しく多様性に富んでいます。１８０００種の中で１６０００種が蛾の仲間で、チョウは約２０００種ほど。なんと圧倒的に蛾の種類の方が多いのだとか。

識別の仕方としてよく聞くのが、蛾は夜行性でチョウは昼行性。また蛾は羽を広げて休み、チョウは羽を閉じで休むなどと言われていますが例外もあるそうで、更にチョウにそっくりな蛾も存在するのだとか。そうなると蛾でもチョウでも同じではないかと思いますが、子どもの頃からの刷り込みとは恐ろしいもので、イメージが違いは拭えません。

 

蝶は陶磁器などの絵柄としても世界中で描かれてきました。中国でも蝶は幸福や繁栄の象徴として昔より様々な工芸品にも用いられました。日本でも蛹から華麗に飛び立つ様子が不死再生を表すとし、吉祥文様として愛され着物の柄などにも多く用いられています。東海地方では蝶の絵柄を家紋とする家も多いのだとか。

 

昔はもしかしたら、チョウ？蛾？などという区別はそれほどなかったのではと勝手に推測してしまいます。

なにせ古代から生き抜いてきたチョウ目の中で蛾の種類の方が圧倒的に多いのですから。私も認識を改めようと思います。

Today I came across a black swallowtail butterfly. Is it a musk swallowtail butterfly? (Sorry if you are not good at butterflies…) Its jet-black wings shone through the light and its bewitching appearance was so cool that I couldn’t help but take out my phone. I thought they would probably run away as soon as I pointed my camera at them again, but they didn’t move at all. They seemed to be saying, “If you want to take a picture, go ahead.

 

Butterflies generally occur several times a year, and in the case of swallowtail butterflies, there are two types: the spring type, in which overwintered pupae hatch from April to May, and the summer type, in which eggs born from the spring type hatch from June to August. I wonder if the swallowtail butterflies I encountered had just overwintered and hatched. It certainly looked as if it was still fearful of its surroundings. Somehow.

 

Surprisingly, recent studies say that butterflies were born 100 million or 200 million years ago, and there are reports that scales of butterflies and moths from 210 million years ago have been found. This means that butterflies and moths were born long before flowering plants appeared. But if this is the case, butterflies still seem to be mysterious creatures, such as what they fed on with their straw-like proboscis. I have heard that butterflies cannot fly without scales, and that scales play an important role in regulating body temperature, water resistance, and controlling the scent of sex identification. Many people who do not like butterflies are not fond of scales, but it seems that they are indispensable for butterflies.

There are various theories, but at the latest, 66 million years ago, almost all the currently recognized species of butterflies had appeared. This means that butterflies were already flying around dinosaurs. It is also a slightly funny sight.

 

When I was a child, I used to ask myself, “Is this a butterfly? Or a moth?” I used to ask myself the question, “Is this a butterfly or a moth? I had an irrational attitude toward moths, because although they are beautiful to look at, I somehow wanted to avoid them when they were called “moths. Both moths are members of a group called the Butterflies. The order Butterflies is remarkably diverse among insects, with about 18,000 species in 126 families. 16,000 of the 18,000 species are moths, and there are about 2,000 species of butterflies. By far, there are more moth species than butterflies.

The most common way to distinguish between moths and butterflies is that moths are nocturnal and butterflies are diurnal. Moths rest with their wings spread, while butterflies rest with their wings closed, but there are exceptions. I think that moths and butterflies are the same, but the difference between the two is a terrible thing that has been imprinted on us since childhood, and the difference in image is hard to dispel.

 

Butterflies have been depicted on ceramics and porcelain all over the world. In China, butterflies have been used in various crafts as a symbol of happiness and prosperity since ancient times. In Japan, butterflies are also loved as a lucky motif and are often used in kimono patterns, as the butterfly’s gorgeous flight from its chrysalis represents immortality and rebirth. In the Tokai region, there are many families that use the butterfly as their family crest.

 

 

In the past, perhaps a butterfly? Moth? I would like to speculate that in the past, there was not much of a distinction between butterflies and moths.

After all, moths are by far the most numerous species of butterflies in the order that has survived since ancient times. I will try to change my perception.
