いよいよ始まりましたね。大阪・関西万博2025。

皆さん、行かれるご予定はありますか？残念ながら、私には今のところ予定はありません。

チケットの購入方法は、日にちや時間帯によって金額も異なり、夜間だけというチケットもあるようですね。関西に住んでいたら…と思わずにはいられません。ここ最近テレビでも紹介されていますが、1周2kmあるという大屋根リングや各国のパビリオンの建造物、夜間照明など、実物はぜひ見てみたいものです。

 

長い歴史の中で、日本が初めて万博に参加したのは、なんと「江戸時代」 !　1867年に開催された「第2回パリ万博」に徳川幕府・薩摩藩・佐賀藩が参加しました。漆器、陶磁器、紙といった工芸品や浮世絵などの美術品が展示され、世界の人々が日本に興味を持つきっかけになったとされています。

このパリ万博には、2024年に発行が開始された新紙幣の“顔”である渋沢栄一も派遣されていて、彼の現地での経験が日本の産業育成に大いに生かされたと言われています。日本政府として初めて公式参加したのは、1873年のウィーン万博。実は万博と日本はとても長い歴史を持っておりました。

 

そもそも万博とは、 正式名称は国際博覧会、もしくは万国博覧会といいます。万博は1928年に締結された国際博覧会条約に基づいて開催され、条約で開催条件などのルールが定められており、開催には条約締結と同じ年に設置されたフランス・パリに本部があるBIE＝博覧会国際事務局の承認が必要となります。この博覧会国際事務局（BIE）の承認を受けたものだけが正式に「万博」と名乗れるということになります。

 

そして万博には「登録博覧会」と「認定博覧会」の2種類があります。

大規模で総合的なテーマを扱う「登録博覧会」は、原則として5年以上の間隔をおいて開催され、開催期間は最長6か月となります。参加国が自らパビリオンを建設し、展示内容も多岐にわたるのが特徴です。

一方、登録博覧会に比べて規模が小さい「認定博覧会」は、テーマが特定の分野に絞られている万博です。 開催期間は最長3か月で、登録博の間に行われます。 パビリオンの建設は基本的に開催国が担当し、参加国の負担が軽減されます。

 

これまで日本では、過去に5回の万博が開催されています。１回目はいわずと知れた1970年の大阪万博ですが、実はこれ以前に幻となった万博開催計画があったことをご存知でしょうか。日本書紀に基づく日本建国から2600年の節目として開催が企画されたもので、1923年に発生した関東大震災からの復興を世界にアピールすることも目的とされていました。会場予定地は、東京・月島（現在の晴海）の埋立地と横浜・山下公園。総面積は160万㎡で、大阪・関西万博の会場面積155万㎡を上回る規模だったとか。また、メインゲートとして建設された「勝鬨橋」は、日本人の技術力を結集させた東洋一の可動橋として注目を集めました。入場券を印刷・販売するまで準備が進んでいたものの、戦争の影響により、幻の万博となったのだそうです。

 

1970年の大阪万博では、世界中から万博を訪れた人は6,420万人以上と言われており、1日に83万人が訪れた日もあったようです。あまりの人出に入場制限を行った日もあったとのこと。期間中の迷子は4万人以上という記録も !

次の「登録博」は2030年、サウジアラビアのリヤド。こんなに近くで万博があるのはいつになるか…。私が生きている間にはもう日本で開催されない気がする…。それだけで充分行く価値があるかもしれませんね。

The Osaka-Kansai Expo 2025 has finally begun. Osaka-Kansai Expo 2025.

I see that there are different ways to purchase tickets, with different amounts depending on the date and time, and some tickets are only available at night. I can’t help but think that if I lived in the Kansai region…. The actual structures, such as the large roof ring with a circumference of 2 km, the pavilions of each country, and the nighttime lighting, all of which have been introduced on TV recently, are something I would love to see in person.

In the long history of Japan, the first time Japan participated in an Expo was in the Edo period!　The Tokugawa Shogunate, the Satsuma Clan, and the Saga Clan participated in the “2nd Paris Expo” held in 1867. Crafts such as lacquerware, ceramics, and paper, as well as ukiyo-e woodblock prints and other works of art, were exhibited, and it is said that the event triggered the world’s interest in Japan.

Eiichi Shibusawa, the “face” of the new banknote to be issued in 2024, was also sent to the Paris Expo, and it is said that his experience there was of great benefit to the development of Japanese industry. The Japanese government’s first official participation was at the Vienna Expo in 1873. In fact, Japan has a long history with World Expositions.

Expo is officially called an international exposition or a world exposition. Expositions are held in accordance with the International Exposition Convention concluded in 1928, which stipulates the conditions and rules for holding an exposition. Only those events that have been approved by the BIE can officially call themselves “Expositions.

There are two types of Expos: “Registered Expos” and “Certified Expos.

Registered Expositions, which deal with large-scale, comprehensive themes, are generally held at intervals of at least five years, with a maximum duration of six months. Participating countries build their own pavilions and exhibit a wide range of exhibits.

On the other hand, “certified expositions,” which are smaller in scale than registered expositions, focus on specific themes. They last up to three months and are held between registered expositions. The construction of pavilions is basically handled by the host country, reducing the burden on participating countries.

Japan has hosted five World Expos in the past, the first of which was the well-known 1970 Osaka Expo, but did you know that there was an earlier, unrealized plan to hold a World Expo? The first Expo was held in 1970 in Osaka, but did you know that there was an earlier Expo that was never held? The event was planned to mark the 2,600th anniversary of the founding of Japan according to the Chronicles of Japan, and was also intended to show the world the recovery from the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923. The planned venues were the reclaimed land of Tsukishima (now Harumi) in Tokyo and Yamashita Park in Yokohama. The total area of the Expo was 1.6 million square meters, which was larger than the 1.55 million square meters of the Osaka-Kansai Expo. The Kachidokibashi Bridge, built as the main gate, attracted attention as the largest movable bridge in the East, which was the result of the combined technological prowess of the Japanese people. Although preparations had progressed to the point where admission tickets were printed and sold, the Expo became a phantom due to the war.

At the 1970 Osaka Expo, it is said that more than 64.2 million people from all over the world visited the Expo, with some 830,000 people visiting on a single day. There were even days when the crowds were so large that admission was restricted. There was also a record of more than 40,000 people lost during the Expo!

The next “Registered Expo” will be held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in 2030. When will there be another Expo this close by…? I don’t think it will be held in Japan again in my lifetime…. That might be enough to make it worth going.
